Understanding Cat Adoption

Understanding Cat Adoption

I have found that many people adopt a cat on a ‘spur of the moment’ decision. They may be vaguely thinking about it, or have a friend with a beautiful new kitten, or just be walking past the pet shop when they see this adorable kitten that just can’t be left there. Sometimes it can be a friend who has a litter of kittens to find homes for and many times it is your children saying ‘please, please’ just one time too many.

Kittens are really like children. Absolutely adorable when they are young and playful but then they grow up. And like children, they are a lot of work to begin with when all the training is needed.

However, just like with children, if you treat your cat with love and respect and train it properly, it will give you much joy and love in return for many years.

I have a friend who loves cats. Like me, she is lucky enough to live in a rural setting on a fairly large block of land. However, she has never had any of her cats neutered or spayed and so they keep breeding. And keep breeding. The last time I was at her house there were well over 20 cats of all ages there. It got too hard trying to count them as they never stayed still.

This is her choice so I’m not criticizing her but for me that would be irresponsible. The feeding of that many cats would be way outside my budget, and the vet bills would be prohibitive.

Because your cat will be a part of your family for anywhere up to 20 years, it would be prudent to make sure you choose wisely and make a considered decision.

Make sure you know what sort of cat you want to adopt before you go into to that pet shop. How much are you prepared to pay for your kitten. Do you understand the ongoing costs of food, toys, litter, vet bills etc? There are also the ‘start up’ costs such as bedding, litter tray, feeding bowls etc.

You also need to take into account the wear and tear on your furniture, especially at the beginning. You will need to train your cat not to use your favorite couch as a scratching post. We have chairs that have been shredded because we didn’t introduce the scratching post early enough. Funnily enough when we finally bought some new furniture, the cats didn’t scratch it.

Are you prepared to invest the time to train your new kitten and put up with messes and puddles for a while? You also need to have time to play with and bond with your kitten, getting to know each other. The more you can understand your cat’s body language, the better your relationship will be.

If you have children, who is going to be responsible for the day to day care of your cat. It is wise to instill in children early on that a cat, or any pet for that matter, is for life, not just while they’re in that ‘cute’ stage. Teaching children to be responsible for their pet will have life long positive repercussions.

Understanding what is involved in cat adoption before you choose your new pet will not only help you make a truly informed decision, it will also help you deal with problems as they occur.…

Diabetic Cat Food – How You Can Reduce the Need for Insulin

It is now generally accepted that human diabetes is an immune disorder. There seems no reason to suppose that feline diabetes is any different. This particular immune disorder has the form of failure of the pancreas to produce immune system brakes down because of the burden put upon it, mostly a chemical burden. When you consider all the chemicals most pets are subject to, there is little wonder their immune systems go on strike. Drugs, vaccinations, pesticides in the garden, harsh cleaners in the house, but perhaps worse of all by virtue of it’s frequent ingestion, are the preservatives in their daily diet.A typical cat food is processed and comes in a box, packet or can. The dried cat food must contain high levels of preservative to keep it at room temperature, indefinitely, despite what the packet may say. Believe me, there’s no other way to have such a long shelf are particularly sensitive to chemicals, so readily succumb to them. A stay in a cattery may well overload them, as most catteries fastidiously clean their pens with strong disinfectants or bleach, to ensure there’s no cross contamination. There are several things you can do immediately, to help your cat overcome this serious disease, even if they have had it a while. You never know how much good you can do until you try.

A good diabetic cat food, like any good cat food, is as close to that of a wild cats food as possible. Cats have evolved to efficiently use raw food. They can’t use processed and cooked food in the same way, as they lack the nutrients destroyed by you have your cat regularly eating good quality raw food, she may need less insulin. And if it isn’t too far advanced, there’s no reason why she shouldn’t recover completely. Recovery from serious disease is not uncommon when the cause is addressed. Ensuring your cat only eats a healthy, high quality, raw, diet, at the very least will reduce her need for insulin.…

What You Must Know If You Have Cats

Cats combine strength, grace, and intelligence to a superlative degree. Cats are definitely a very common pet and are in every major city. Learning to live in a home with these intriguing animals can sometimes be a challenge. These creative, smart, and agile animals can often be stubborn and need special tactics.

Protecting your cat from household chemicals is something that you may already know, but did you know that protecting them from medications is just as important? Common over the counter medicines such as ibuprofen can be toxic to your cat, even in small doses. Keep your medication safely out of the reach of your cat.

Do not flush clumpable litter in your toilet. This can lead to problems with your plumbing. Instead just lift the clumps and dispose of them in a trash bag. Don’t forget, moisture is what makes the litter clump in the first place! Avoid doing that to your pipes and just dispose of it properly.

Cats are pretty low maintenance pets. They do not need as much attention and one-on-one time as dogs do. Cleaning the litter box is one of the most dreaded chores in the house. Investing in a good self-cleaning litter box can help to reduce the amount of times you have to clean it out.

Are you the owner of a dog and a cat? Dogs will always try to eat a cat’s food. For this reason, you need to place your cat’s bowl in an area that is to high for a dog to reach. This also makes sure that the two don’t fight over water.

You should do regular checkups of your cat between veterinarian visits. A good time to do this is when you are petting the animal. Check the entire body for things like scabs and lesions. Also look in and around the ears for any discharge, which can be a sign of ear mites. Check the cat from head to tail.

While there is nothing wrong with using clumping cat litter for older felines, you should stick with sandy litter when dealing with kittens. The clumping litters are usually treated with all types of chemicals that may nto be safe for smaller cats. Once they are older, you should be able to make the switch with no issue.

Your cat will thrive if allowed to say indoors. Cats who stay inside for most of their lives have a much better life span and are less likely to get diseases and parasites. While cats can get their exercise roaming the neighborhood and squaring off against other cats, they can also get diseases and injuries this way. Vigorous indoor play with an owner is a preferable way to get exercise.

Protect your cat and your kid by demonstrating the proper way to show affection for the animal. Few things are more appealing to children than the sight of a soft, fluffy cat, and they might be tempted to hug or squeeze the animal. Instead, teach your child to allow the animal to come to you rather than pursuing it. Tell them to use a light touch and avoid making direct eye contact with the cat

Try your best not to feed your cat any table scraps, even if you are sure this would be better than throwing the extra food away. Once you feed your cat this type of thing, they will no longer want to eat the cat food that you give them regularly.

Clean your cat’s litter box. Cats will use litter boxes on instinct if they know where to find it. Let your cat go naturally and don’t manually force it to go by putting it in the box or pushing it to scratch the litter. Keep the box in a private place, scoop its contents on a daily basis and give it a periodic wash.

Animal Control

Keep track of your feline friend by having the animal microchipped. This small device is implanted beneath the skin between your cat’s shoulder blades. Microchip implantation may sting for a few seconds, but the implant is otherwise unnoticeable and will not cause your pet any discomfort. This chip makes it easier for animal control to locate your cat if it goes missing.

With the tips provided you can stay on top by outsmarting your cat. They will know what they can and cannot do. Though they are very unlike dogs, cats are very loving animals and very rewarding to own.…

Getting Your Cat Ready for a New Baby

Having a new baby join your home is a change for everyone there. It is no different for pets that you have. Indoor pets are, especially, affected by the new bundle of joy. They may see a new baby as an intruder to their territory. There are some things you can do to get your cat ready to share the home with a new child.

Before you begin your training make sure that your cat is healthy. A check-up with a veterinarian is a good idea if your pet hasn’t had one lately. A couple other basic things to do are to play sounds of a baby to let your pet get used to the sound of a newborn human and to let him or her explore the nursery. Don’t let the cat set up camp in the nursery, though. This will make the situation worse when the baby starts using the room and displaces the cat.

If the child isn’t born yet and the pregnant woman is the person that does most of the caring for the cat, the responsibilities should be shifted before delivery. Cleaning the litter box should have already been a duty given to someone else for health reasons. Feeding and playtime should also be taken over by someone else in the house. This will keep the cat from feeling as jealous of the baby taking all of the mother’s time after the child comes home.

Get your cat used to the sounds and smells that come with having a baby in the house. Set up the baby swing and let it swing empty. Put some baby powder on a couple blankets and play with some baby toys. Allow your pet to associate these sounds and smells with you or the other caregivers before the child is in the picture.

Crib covers are available to keep the cat from getting into the crib and thinking that is his or her new bed. These can be used after the child comes home, as well. Another idea is to replace the door on the nursery with a screen door. This will allow you to keep the cat from getting into the room but still allowing you to hear if the baby is awake or upset.…

Taking Part In Kitten Competitions

Taking Part In Kitten Competitions

Kitten competitions are shows where kittens are paraded and made to compete with one another to win a variety of titles. Owners are used to training a kitten to enter these kinds of competitions. Kitten owners register themselves and their cats at such shows where judges check their breed standard and award them ribbons.

Kitten and cat competitions admit pedigreed as well as moggy cats, though the rules of admission differ with each organization hosting the competition. Often a kitten owner will register the pet at multiple kitten competitions to be held throughout the year. Based on points collected over several shows, the kitten is awarded an annual title. Additional titles at the national and regional levels are also awarded at times.

At any kitten competition, a kitten or a cat is judged against other felines of the same breed, age, sex and color. Kitty behavior is also an important criterion on which they receive points. Kittens which are not properly trained have a tendency to hiss, spit, scratch and bite. Such kittens are awarded negative points or no points at all. For this reason, training a kitten properly is very crucial. The largest and most prestigious cat competition in the world is held in November each year at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham, UK. This competition is often described as the Crufts of the world of cats and kittens.

Nowadays, a lot of kitten competitions are held online. The criteria for winning these competitions are of course based solely on the cuteness of the kitten as it is hard to judge breeding and pedigree online. The online kitten competitions do not require the owners to train their cats. Owners send a nominal subscription fee along with their kitten’s photo to the site owners who then display the pictures to a public vote. The kitten which gets the most number of votes in the good looks section wins the competition. Online kitten competitions hold no real value. Rather, they are more of fun events and work well to boost the ego of the kitty owners. Perhaps this is the reason why competitions like ‘Cutest Pet Contest’ and ‘Cute Kitten’ have become very popular with kitten owners.

If you wish to register your pet for a competition, by all means go ahead and have fun. It is important to remember that while it is good to be competitive, sometimes there can only be one winner and you should love your kitty all the same no matter how she is ranked.…

Animals in the Wild – Television Viewing at Its Finest

Some of TV’s finest moments come from performances that don’t involve trained actors. TV documentaries fascinate many people. News and information shows also serve to “entertain” those who thirst for knowledge.
Wacky programming that feature dysfunctional individuals with over-the-top problems help create an audience for people like Jerry Springer and Maury Povich. Their shows are far-out and, while the problems presented may be real, live audiences don’t share in the pain shown by invited guests. They often squeal with laughter at them.
However, there is a TV format that is worthy of respect and the time it takes to watch an entire show unfold. This format, generally presented by National Geographic, follows the daily lives of animals in the wild. This is truly fascinating TV – educational and very entertaining, absorbing and often exciting – words from an encyclopedia that come “thrillingly” to life.
I, for one, believe that TV that educates often does a better job of entertaining than TV that intends only to entertain. In other words, trailing “gorillas in the mist” is far more entertaining than today’s hottest half hour sitcom.
Others may disagree, but that is what I believe… and feel. Education is intoxicating. Education you can “see” is almost irresistible. I love it and I’m not alone. When you tune in to one of these shows and see close-up footage of lions in their natural habitat – resting during the day, hunting in the night – you wonder (at least I wonder) what the photographer had to endure to get the film footage. Surely, there was no 5-star hotel nearby.
Moreover, “getting the footage” had to be incredibly dangerous. Wild animals follow their instincts and that can turn a photographer who is not careful into prey. In fact, that happened several years ago to a “naturalist” who had dedicated his life to living part of each year in the habitat of grizzly bears.
His experiences lasted for thirteen years until a grizzly turned on him, attacked and killed him. It’s a dangerous life, but it must be a satisfying life, as well. The film footage of bears… lions… wildebeest… crocodiles… and so many other forms of wildlife make TV interesting, entertaining, educational and incredibly compelling. I love it.…

Some Important Tips on Your Ferret’s Care

Some Important Tips on Your Ferret’s Care

Ok, so you have your new pet ferret, you eagerly brought him home and introduced him to the family. The kids probably fell in love with him as soon as they saw him, and the wife turned her nose up at the smell.

Well, after all the introductions have been made, the fun really begins. You are going to have to start training your new family member. Now at this point he is probably either very nervous, or he is jumping about all over the place. This is where you have to make it very clear to your ferret, what he can, and can not do.

If you or your kids are handling or even playing with your ferret, he will probably have the tendency to start nipping. This is one of the things that you are going to have to start dealing with, especially where your children are concerned.

If he does start nipping, you will have to tell him in a stern voice “no”. Eventually he should start associating the word no, and the tone of your voice, with the fact that he has to stop. If this measure is not taken, then your ferret will soon start to be resented by other members of your family.

The ferrets teeth are specifically designed to cut through meat and bones, so they could inflict some serious damage. This is why it is so important to deal with this problem, right from the onset.

Ferrets also love to be cuddled, but more than that they love to play games. The rougher the games are the better, and they seem to enjoy it. I am not talking about throwing him around the room, but having mock fights with him. Or even letting him tug on a length of cord, or a bit of old material. They really seem to enjoy a contest of strength.

As long as you treat your ferret gently when appropriate, and play with them when they want to have some fun. Your new family member should quickly form a bond with you, and with the rest of your family. For much more information on a ferrets care, click on the link.…

How to Stop a Kitten From Biting You

How to Stop a Kitten From Biting You

Before going into further detail about how to address kitten aggression, it is important to first bear in mind that all members of the cat family – no matter what their size – share common traits. One of those traits is that they have a naturally aggressive side to their nature. This stems from the fact that all cats are hunters, and even though a domestic cat will most likely not ever have to go out and hunt for food or fight for survival in the same way as her wild cousins, the basic instincts are still there. Understanding what triggers a kitten to behave in an aggressive manner is in fact the key to learning how to stop her from directing her aggression at you.

The first golden rule is never to use your hands as a “toy” when playing with your kitten. As soon as your kitten sees your fingers dancing around on the floor in front of her, they are no longer a part of your body. They are quite simply prey.

Kittens and cats love to chase moving objects. What they are in effect doing is fine tuning their hunting skills. So rather than using your hands as the “target”, try keeping some distance between you and the kitten and let her chase a soft toy attached to a piece of string instead (or even just a piece of string on its own!) A small soft ball that your kitten can bat and chase around is another good substitute. Just keep her well away from you when she is in hunting mode and she is less likely to view your body parts as something she should attack.

The second golden rule is respecting the fact that although kittens may look cute and cuddly they do not always want to be picked up and stroked. A good indicator of the kitten’s mood is to keep your distance from her in the first instance and hold out your hand to her. If she comes across and sniffs your hand then that suggests she may be more receptive to being petted. If she ignores you, then take that as a signal she wants no further attention at the moment. If you push ahead and pick up a kitten when she clearly does not want to be fussed over, the kitten will retaliate in the only way she knows how… by biting and scratching you.

The third golden rule is to observe the kitten’s body language. If a cat is in “hunting mode” he or she is likely to react aggressively to anyone or anything that gets in the way. If your kitten displays any of the following behaviours, the best thing you can do is keep out of her way.

The kitten is crouched down on all fours and has a steady gaze

The kitten shows her teeth when you attempt to touch her

The pupils start to dilate

The fur fluffs up

The ears are turned down

The tail starts swishing sharply from side to side.

Once a kitten develops into an adult they become less playful and excitable and usually any aggression shown towards their owner subsides. They also find other ways to develop their hunting skills once they have access to the great outdoors – and this is something that continues for the rest of their life.…

How to Care For Your Pet Ferret

How to Care For Your Pet Ferret

Ferrets are very similar to most other pets you could own. They require a high quality food, plenty of fresh water, and regular trips to a good vet that is knowledgeable about ferrets. However, the most important thing in pet ferret needs is an observant owner who will keep them safe and healthy. This is basically all you need to do to care for your pet ferret.

If you are reading this article you obviously care about your pet and want to do the best you can to look after him. You need to examine your ferret carefully on a daily basis, make sure his eyes are clear and bright, there should be no swelling, redness, or gloopy buildup around the eye lids.

His whiskers should be long and soft, if you notice any broken whiskers this can indicate that they are not being fed properly or they may have an illness that is preventing them from taking in the nutrients they need. Make sure to point this out to your vet on your next visit.

Check around his ears to make sure that is not scratching them that this can indicate that he has ear mites which can damage the ferrets ear drums. These are easily treated if caught early.

Your Ferrets teeth should be clean and the gums around his teeth should be a nice pink colour. The veterinarian should clean his teeth if he notices any tartar buildup or redness of the gums. As ferrets are playful animals that examine their environment through biting they can often break teeth, this is not necessarily a problem unless it is making it difficult for him to eat.

The most important thing you can do to care for your pet ferret is to love and care for him as though he were a member of your family.…

Cat Behaviour Problems: Understanding Why A Cat Does Not Use The Litter Box

Cat Behaviour Problems: Understanding Why A Cat Does Not Use The Litter Box

One of the main cat behaviour problems that we face as feline owners is whether the litter box is being used properly. Many felines are able to use the litter box correctly, but other cats can have issues using the litter, and will end up urinating or defecating elsewhere in the home. Instead of becoming angry at your cat because of this behaviour, there are several considerations you must make as this behaviour may be completely out of your cat’s control.

Health Concerns

Before you consider anything else, make sure you have your feline checked over by a Veterinarian. Inappropriate elimination is one of the main symptoms of sickness in cats, especially due to kidney or liver problems, or Urinary Tract Infections. Ensuring that your kitty is in good health will help you to identify and understand the root cause of this cat behaviour problem.

Spraying

Marking or spraying is sometimes mistaken for inappropriate elimination. A cat that is spraying in the home will urinate on a vertical surface such as a wall or a couch as opposed to a horizontal surface, such as the floor. Marking can occur if a cat is not spayed or neutered, or if a cat is trying to communicate with other neighbourhood cats.

Dirty Litter

Cats are very sensitive to smells and are not interested in smelling or walking on dirty litter. Imagine having to use a litter tray that had not been cleaned for weeks… it would definitely be an unpleasant experience. Your feline may have decided that he does not want to hold his breath, and he has instead chosen to do his business elsewhere in the house. Make sure you clean the tray once a day, and change the litter at least every two weeks.

Stress

Any type of change in the home can cause stress for a feline. Rearranging furniture, home renovations, and strangers in the home can cause a kitty to experience stress. Strange people or animals can cause high stress for a cat if he or she has to walk past these strangers to use the litter box. Make sure to monitor your cat’s behaviour in what may be a stressful situation to make sure he or she does not have an adverse reaction to the change.

Recognizing and understanding the cause of this cat behaviour problem is the first step in helping you to reduce these undesirable accidents in the future. Once you have discovered the cause of this behaviour, you will be able to focus on understanding your kitty to help eliminate the behaviour in the future.…

What is the Largest Breed of Cat?

What is the Largest Breed of Cat?

The tiger is the largest breed of cat. It is a highly adaptable animal and lives in some of the more densely populated areas of the world. The Bengal is the most recognized in the world.

It is native to most of eastern and southern Asia. It is at the top of the food chain with no known predators. Being a carnivore, it feeds on meat from other animals. It can reach up to 13 feet in length and 660 months in weight. Unlike the lion, it is a solitary and territorial animal. The first tigers were known to have live 1.2 million years ago.

The most numerous species, the Bengal, is a rusty brown colored animal with black stripes and a white fringe around the face. The coloring provides camouflage for the animal in the wild. Because of its powerfully built legs and shoulders, it can pull down prey heavier than itself. It usually hunts at night and will attack most animals for food. It will always have good cover, be near water and have enough prey. When it is wounded or unable to catch its prey, it will attack humans for food, hence the name man eater.

There are eight species: Bengal, Indochinese, Malayan, Sumatran, Siberian, South China, Balinese(extinct) and Javan(extinct). The remaining six are considered endangered. Due to growing human populations in their former habitats, conflicts with humans have resulted in the killing many of them.

Another variation of the Bengal is the white tiger. Although rare in the wild, it has been successfully bred in zoos. It tends to be crossed eyed and its life span is less than its orange counterpart. It is a popular attraction at a zoo and was used in Siegfried and Roy’s Las Vegas magic act until February, 2009.

The Animal Planet conducted a poll to determine the world’s favorite animal. It was voted first by 1% more than the dog. There is an estimated 12,000 tigers in the United States kept as pets by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Only nineteen states ban private ownership of it. Like any wild animal, making it a pet can be dangerous especially when it reaches full size.

It is the national animal of many Asian countries. It is the mascot for many sports teams and companies. Many novels have been written about the animal. It is usually seen in most jungle movies. It remains as a symbol of a fierce but noble animal.…

How To Manage Your Catnip Plant

My cat, Patches, does a pretty good job of managing his live catnip plant. My other cats ripped their up right away but Patches takes his time with a catnip plant.

At first he just jumps up on the window sill by his plant and takes a few sniffs. Then he lays down in the sun in the window and sleeps awhile. When he wakes up he walks up to it and nibbles a few leaves off and slowly chews them. Then he strolls over to the bed and sprawls out and rolls around some. Then he puts his legs and paws up in the air and rolls around some more. After that he sleeps awhile more. Having had a good snooze he comes out and asks for something interesting to eat. He dines intently, savoring each flavorful bite and then hops up on his favorite chair and sleeps some more. The next time he gets in the window by his plant he ignores it at first He just eyes it some from the corners of his eyes. He lays in the sun and looks down out over the neighborhood and watches the action. Then he walks up and sniffs his plant again then jumps down and runs around some.

A few hours later he sniffs the leaves again and takes a few nibbles off the leaves. He chews slowly while looking out the window again. Then he goes back to the bed for some more sprawling and rolling around. He rolls his eyes all around. Then he swats at the air with his claws protruding. I don’t know what he swats at. It looks to me like there is nothing there but air. Beats me. After he sleeps some more he comes back out to snack on his bowl of dry cat food. It is always there for him. He sleeps some more in his favorite chair with the spongy covered cushion. Afterwords he has a big drink of fresh cold water and has me pet him for awhile. Then he goes back to the sunny window by his catnip.

Patches does a good job of managing his cat nip plant I must say again. My other cats chewed up their plants right away but Patches makes his last. He hits on it only a few times every couple of days. It lasts him several months. He prunes it carefully by nibbling sporadically. I think he really does an impressive job of taking care of his stash. I am proud of him. I couldn’t do better myself.…

Siamese are often described as the extroverts of the cat world! They are fun loving and mischievous well into adulthood. Siamese want to be involved in everything you are doing. Whether you are reading a book, typing your emails or sorting your paperwork, your Siamese will always be on hand to ‘help’. Siamese crave attention and dislike being left alone for long periods of time. If you are going to be out for the majority of the day it would probably be best to keep two Siamese kittens. Most Siamese cats are very vocal and you can ‘chat’ with your cat all day long. Be warned though she is likely to insist on ‘having the last word’. Feral Cats – What Is the Difference Between a Stray Feline and a Feral Feline?

Feral Cats – What Is the Difference Between a Stray Feline and a Feral Feline?

Many cats in the world are homeless, and therefore must live on the street for the entirety of their lives. Some people categorize these felines as stray, while others categorize these felines as feral. Although both terms do mean that a feline is currently homeless, stray cats and feral cats are actually two completely different types of cat. Do you know the difference between these homeless felines?

What is a Stray Cat?

Stray felines are defined as cats that were once someone’s pet, though due to unforeseen circumstances, they are now homeless. These felines may be homeless due to many factors including the kitty leaving its home and becoming lost, or in some situations, the kitty’s owners have abandoned it.

Because stray cats have had human contact for most of their lives, they will tend to be more welcoming to humans and they will not run away as readily as a feral cat. This means that stray cats can be tamed quite easily, which allows the possibility for many stray cats to be adopted into loving homes once again.

What is a Feral Cat?

On the other hand, feral cats are felines who have lived on the street all of their lives. These homeless cats live on the street because they are born to a homeless cat (either stray or feral). These felines are very frightened of humans, and they can be hostile toward humans because they are not used to human contact. Although this hostility can be disconcerting to some people, be assured that these cats are only acting out as a defense mechanism because they are scared.

Feral felines are much more difficult to adopt into loving homes. Socializing a feral cat can take many years of love and devotion before the cat will trust a human. Feral kittens are easier to adopt into loving homes if they are socialized at a very early age.

Stray and feral cats often live together in colonies, and they are able to survive on the street by scrounging for food, and by finding feeding stations in their community. These feeding stations are small areas that volunteers create to give these homeless felines access to food, water, and a warm place to sleep.

As you can see, feral and stray felines have very different backgrounds and reasons for living on the street. Feral cats have lived on the street for their whole lives, while stray cats are forced to live on the street due to unforeseen circumstances. Unfortunately, living on the street is not the ideal situation for any of these felines. If you’d like to help homeless cats there is likely a feral or stray cat rescue organization right in your community who would love any support to help these homeless cats.…

All About Basset Hounds

Why the long face? Well to start of with the Basset hound has a longer face than most dogs. They also have long ears in comparison to the rest of their body. They are a distinctive breed that usually weighs 40 to 60 pounds and stands about 14 inches. You will find that they are about any hound color from brown, tan, black, and white or a mixture of colors. You will find that their coat is coarse with short hairs and it is weather resistant. In other words they don?t tend to get too soaked from rain, get too cold or too warm depending on the climate.

The Bassett Hound is one of the most pleasurable breeds in the dog groups because they are well behaved, affectionate, and they love to be sweet. One minor issue with this dog is the need to howl or bark. They tend to make noise even when there is nothing to bark at. Therefore you may see them as a great alarm system, but not a great guard dog. They tend to be very affectionate with strangers and other dogs as well.

You will find that they are quite lazy and peaceful despite the need to bark or howl. They also tend to be stubborn during training, but more on that later. First you will want to know they are better with older children. Their ears are extremely sensitive and they don?t wish to be handled roughly by the younger set. As for intelligence they can be taught tricks with patience, but they are not the most intelligent dog.

Basset hounds need grooming daily. You will find they shed quite a bit so brushing and combing them at least once a day will keep this down. The basset hound tends to neglect the natural method of grooming as well as their toenails so you will need to spend a little time and care to get them in shape.

Part of the laziness factor is actually due to a tendency to overheat easily. They do need to have plenty of exercise, but it should be a moderate pace. Since they don?t tend to run around a lot you need to help them stay healthy as part of the dog care package. You can certainly let them roam around a fenced yard, but again they do need a regiment of exercise to keep them healthy.

Training is one of the most important aspects of this breed. The basset hound tends to be sensitive and gentle so it requires patience and consistency to train them. You also need to understand that they are stubborn so it may take a little bit to get them motivated. They also like to go off and sniff around rather than be trained. Training should begin as early as puppy- hood to get the best results. You can train them out of the barking and howling for the most part, but that will take a bit of time and definitely some type of reward.

The basset hound is one of the best pets you can have when you consider the dog breeds available. They love to be around humans and other dogs even if they tend to be a little on the lazy side. You will find that affection, devotion, and tranquility are their best qualities as well as being someone to complete a family with children. They don?t have any major medical issues, but you do need to remember their sensitive ears. In case of an accident with their ears you may need to seek your vet.…

Solid Advice About Dogs That Can Help Anyone

As a dog lover, you understand the joy such a pet can bring to your life. You will never be alone again, and you will always have a companion who thinks the world of you. In return, it is your job to care for them, and this article will teach you all you need to know.

If you are in the market for a new puppy, make sure you will have enough time to devote to his training. On average, you need to take a young dog outside to do his business eight times a day and that can take a lot away from your schedule. Training takes more time and patience than most people realize.

Before deciding on what type of dog to get for your family, consider space. Even though you may love the bigger dogs that you can really wrap your arms around, you may not have adequate space for a large breed. Take your home and yard size into consideration before bringing home a new pooch.

Keep your dog in good shape. He can suffer with the same weight-related issues that you can, so make sure he gets plenty of healthy exercise and eats a well-balanced diet. Remember that walking will benefit you as well, so make it a part of your daily routine together to be happier and healthier.

Make your own dog biscuits to provide your beloved canine with the healthiest treats. Most commercial products are over-loaded with chemicals that aren’t good for dogs, despite adding flavor and aroma. Use quality ingredients and tell your dog what you’re doing in the kitchen! Get him all excited and let him taste-test as soon as they’re cool.

Check to make sure your dog’s collar is adjusted properly by fitting two of your fingers comfortably underneath it and pulling gently. There should be just enough room to do this and no more, otherwise he may be able to wiggle out of it. Always keep it on, except during crate transport, as the collar can get snagged and injure.

Feed your dog dry, premium-quality dog food. This kind of dog food helps to make sure your dog gets all of their vital nutrients. Making sure that they get proper nutrition helps them live a longer life and reduces their chances of obesity, malnutrition, skeletal problems, muscular problems, and many more conditions.

If you’re trying to break one of your dog’s unwanted habits, make sure that you understand that it will not happen overnight. Breaking a habit takes time and patience. Don’t get discouraged and give up if it seems like your pup isn’t making progress. Keep at it and maybe try changing your approach to the training. Sometimes this can be the boost that your dog needs.

Don’t forget about your dog when writing your will. Many pets end up being fought over or neglected completely because specific instructions were not left regarding their care. Include a clause that clearly directs your loved ones on what to do with your dog so that he’s well taken care of.

When you own a dog, you typically understand the general costs of ownership, such as food, vet visits, and grooming. A generally overlooked cost is emergency situations. Although it may not happen frequently, you should have a bit of money set aside for any emergency that may arise. It’s better to be prepared for an emergency vet visit than to wonder how you are going to pay for it.

Just like people, dogs need plenty of exercise for optimum health. Dogs are naturally hunters and love to run by instinct. Take your dog to the park, play Frisbee with him and give him a daily walk. This will help keep him physically healthy but will also make him mentally healthier.

Humane Society

Put your dog through obedience training. A well-trained dog is a joy to live with for both you and them. Teaching them simple commands like “Come,” “Heel,” “Sit,” and “Stay” can help curb or prevent troublesome behaviors in no time. You can either teach them yourself, or you can find out about obedience courses by contacting the SPCA or the local humane society for class recommendations.

Caring for your dog starts with a good education, and this article is a stepping stone to true understanding of the species. Thankfully, you have read it in full, so keep these tips in mind as you continue loving your dog. Read as much as you can to learn more about your pet.…

What You Should Know About Taking Care of a Baby Ferret

What You Should Know About Taking Care of a Baby Ferret

Once you decide to care for a ferret, you have to commit yourself because this is one pet that you will have for life. You will probably get to spend up to $200 to begin with; this includes everything that he will need to ensure that he will live comfortably, happy and healthy. A female ferret is called Jill, the male is called Hob and their offspring are called Kits.

Immunization

A baby ferret will be available at a store when they get as old as seven weeks. They will have to be vaccinated and spayed, to get rid of the distinguished odor just like what is done to the mustelid family. To be able to avoid the distinctive odor from baby kits, they are usually castrated; this is the process where the anal glands are detached. This process is done when the kits becomes six to seven weeks old. The cuts made during the process are intentionally small so that they will not be that visible when the kits get sold.

Vaccinations

When the baby ferret gets as old as eight weeks, they have to undergo a distemper inoculation. When they reach the age of 11-12 weeks, he will need a booster and when he finally reaches the age of 14-16 weeks, he should get his final booster. After he completed his booster, he then, should be vaccinated each year. He also needs a shot for anti-rabies but not until he is around 12-13 weeks of age.

These immunizations are really essential, so you must have these for your pet. You should also provide all the essentials that your baby ferret must have. They need a litter box and should be nip-trained. They usually nip hard, because this is their common nature. They also possess coarse fur and they usually play rough.

Sleep and Play

Baby ferret will definitely need a cage where he could be comfortable and sleep soundly. When you purchase a cage you should look for something that is safe, spacious and you can easily clean. Find a cage with a huge door so that you can easily get to your ferret when he sleeps in his hammock or nest box.

Ferret likes to play hard; you must provide him few toys that could fathom his restlessness. Durable cat toys that can tolerate your pet’s razor-sharp teeth will be good enough. You can also offer him some sturdy balls; just make sure that you will look after him when he plays. There are some baby toys that are perfect for baby kits too, in fact.

Ferret Feeding

When baby kits are made available at the pet store, they are already nourished and weaned from their parents. They usually possess not so sharp teeth because of their young age. One thing that you can do to help them is to dip their foods in warm water for ten minutes prior to feeding. Never ever give them any cat food because it harms their health.

Baby kits require proteins and fats from their foods compared to kittens. Kits usually have short intestinal system and fast metabolism. It usually takes long for the food to go and pass from the stomach to the intestines. When you go and buy their foods, make sure that it is consists of 20% fat and 35% protein.

Stop Excessive Meowing And Reasons That Cats Meow

If you are looking for a pet that will be silent or, at least, not make much noise you should look past getting a cat. While they are considered to be less noisy than a dog, they can create a lot of noise on their own and will meow more than some dogs will bark.

Cats meow to communicate. They do it to communicate with you, your family, or other animals. Some breeds of cat tend to enjoy communicating more than other breeds. Siamese, Manx, and American Wirehair are just some of the cat breeds that meow more than the average feline.

If you spend enough time around your kitty you might notice different sounds of meows. Different meows mean different things. Some reasons for a meow include hunger, thirst, interest in something, disinterest in something, discomfort, contentment, and other things. What constitutes excessive meowing? That is up to you to decide after taking into consideration the breed, health, and stress of your animal.

A cat that is being transitioned to a new home might meow a lot at first. One that is being moved indoors from an outdoor life or from indoors to outdoors will probably make more noise than normal. This should fade as your pet adjusts to the new living arrangement. During breeding season he or she is probably searching for a mate. Consider getting your feline spayed or neutered if he or she isn’t already. Make sure that your kitten is getting enough food to eat and has access to fresh water to drink. If there are people showing up or leaving regularly, the meow could be a greeting or a “goodbye.” Older cats, sometimes, meow more because of health issues. Some of these issues are normal problems of aging and some require professional assistance. If you suspect this to be the case contact a qualified veterinarian.

Don’t rule out that your pet cat might just be trying to get attention from someone. If this is the case continue to ignore your pets requests. If you give attention of any kind in return for meowing you are, only, going to get more meowing. This is assuming that your cat gets attention from someone at some times. If no one is paying any attention to him or her I urge you to consider finding another home for your feline. One thing to remember is to never use punishment to try and alter a pets behavior. Punishment and negative rewards will only get you more negative behavior.…

How to Select a Low-Shedding Crossbreeding Breeder

There are several factors to consider when selecting a Mini Bernedoodle breeder. First, you should find one with a good reputation, and you should visit their kennel before purchasing a puppy. Ensure the breeder has health certificates and papers for both the parent dogs. You should also find out how many generations the minis came from and their breed history. A good breeder will be able to answer these questions with confidence.

Crossbreeding Mini Bernedoodle Breeder

The prices of Mini Bernedoodles are pretty affordable if you’re looking for a bargain. Most breeders charge significantly more for their puppies. These breeders will deliver puppies to you when you have set aside to purchase them. Some breeders even have a flight nanny, so you don’t have to worry about getting a puppy home. You can make an appointment with them and view the litter, which is a great way to get a better idea of the breed.

Another benefit of buying a Mini Bernedoodle is that they are low-maintenance dogs. Mini Bernedoodles shed very little and are considered hypoallergenic. Grooming is relatively easy, but it is essential to keep the coat clean. A Mini Bernedoodle’s coat is long and curly, making it susceptible to matting and tangling. You can take care of this by brushing the skin at least twice a week and giving your pet a dental check-up every 8-10 weeks.

Consequence Bernedoodle Breeder

Look no further than Above and Beyond Standards if you’re looking for a miniature Bernedoodle breeder. This breeder offers puppies with health guarantees of two to three years. Moreover, each of their puppies has genetically clear parents, and the breeder aims to ensure that every puppy lives a healthy and happy life. In addition, a good breeder will continue to educate themselves and their puppies to ensure that you get the healthiest mini Bernedoodle puppy possible.

Another aspect to consider is temperament. Mini Bernedoodles have low prey drive, so they get along with other pets. They’re generally well-behaved, and they get along well with other dogs, such as cats and rabbits. As long as you don’t plan to live in an apartment for more than a few years, you’ll be happy with your new companion. However, if you’re looking for a companion, a mini Bernedoodle might be just the right fit for you.

A healthy, hypoallergenic personality is one of the best qualities to look for in a mini Bernedoodle breeder. The breed also exhibits superior intelligence, and it should be no harder to groom than any other dog. Moreover, the breeder should be well versed in the best methods of grooming a Bernedoodle. You’ll be glad to find a breeder who shares your values and standards.

If you’re thinking about adopting a Mini Bernedoodle, you’ll need to decide between adopting one from a rescue organization or a breeder. Rescue dogs typically come with unknown backstories. A breeder can help you find a puppy with specific qualities based on your specifications. You can set up a time to meet the puppies and ask any questions you have about health and behavior. This way, you’ll be able to select the puppy that suits you best.

The genetic makeup of a Mini Bernedoodle is still largely unknown, but the thin hair of both sexes may reduce allergen levels. It’s important to note that while a Mini Bernedoodle is hypoallergenic, it’s still possible for someone to develop allergies based on its dander and saliva. The breeder should also be able to accommodate people with allergies by having the dogs spend some time with them.

Bantry Bay Bernedoodles, located in Frederick County, Virginia, is one of the best Mini Bernedoodle breeders on the East Coast. Their puppies are raised indoors among other pets, and the breeders take the time to socialize them. Bantry Bay Bernedoodles will take you on several visits before selecting a puppy. Their puppy socialization rules are stringent – they require the puppy to visit at least seven different places, eat from other containers, and play with various toys.

Finding a Mini Bernedoodle breeder can be challenging, but PuppySpot’s reputable marketplace will match you with the perfect puppy. PuppySpot has interviewed every breeder on its site and only works with trustworthy, certified breeders. PuppySpot also screens each breeder for health and safety certifications and ensures that puppies are healthy and well-bred. The breed’s popularity has made finding a breeder very challenging, but PuppySpot simplifies the process.

Looking After Kittens

Looking After Kittens

Looking after kittens can be a daunting thought, however, instilling certain behavioural patterns and disciplines at the onset will make life so much easier for both you and your kitten. Kittens learn initially through mimicking their mother, but once your kitten has left her mum and is in your care, the job of teaching will be yours.

Once your kitten has settled into her new home you should start to introduce her to different people, allowing them to pick her up, give her cuddles and play with her. It is important that she gets used to people early to prevent her from becoming a timid nervous adult. You should also, where possible introduce her to other cats.

Kittens are playful by nature, so setting some time aside every day to play with her will help her to gain your trust. Ensure your kitten has plenty of toys to play with to prevent her from becoming bored, as boredom can often lead to destruction. Anything, providing it isn’t harmful to your kitten or could be easily swallowed, tied to a piece of string or wool will keep her entertained for hours. Role play such as mimicking hunting will keep her engaged.

An essential part of looking after your kitten will be to groom her daily. Giving her a brush every day has many benefits. Firstly it will help to gain her trust and get her used to being handled from an early age. It will also encourage your kitten to wash herself which would have initially been done by her mum. Continuous grooming throughout your cats life, will also reduce the risk of fur balls.

Your kitten should also have been taught by her mother, how to use the cat litter tray before she arrives in your home. If your kitten does however have an accident, pick her up and place her in the litter tray. Do not shout at her or reprimand her as she will, over time, associate using the litter tray with being told off and thus will not use it. Cats learn through association so by giving her lots of praise and attention when using the litter tray will encourage her to keep using it.

Kittens can be a handful and can adopt destructive behaviour patterns, such as scratching furniture, climbing curtains, scratching you if they aren’t disciplined from an early age. Always reward your kitten for good behaviour with lots of praise and attention. Never scold your kitten for bad behaviour, simply pick her up from whatever it is she is doing, place her down on the floor and walk away. Your kitten will soon learn what actions will give her praise and attention and what types of behaviour won’t.…

Leashes and Collars Help Your Pet Look Great and Feel Comfortable

When you want your pet to look and feel their best, but you also want to keep them safe and close to you, the right leashes and collars can be very important. But what should you look for, and how do you know which ones to get? The style and quality combinations you’re looking for are out there. With dozens of options to consider, you can narrow down the ones you like best and then pick what works best for your pet, as well. You want them to feel comfortable and secure.

What to Look for in Leashes and Collars

Search for Quality Above Everything Else

The most important thing you can have in any collar or leash is quality. You don’t want something so important to break at the wrong time, and suddenly, your pet is down the street or around the block somewhere. They could get injured or stolen if they’re running around loose. While no collar or leash can guarantee that your pet won’t get away from you, having the right ones can make a big difference in the level of protection your pet has. You’ll have more peace of mind, as well.

Focus on What Works With Your Budget

Along with quality, your budget matters. You want to purchase good options, but you also have to stick with what’s affordable for you. That way, you’ll have the best quality you can get. Your pet will be safe and secure, and you can choose fun colors or patterns that add style to your pet’s look, too. Depending on what kind of budget you have, you may want to get several leashes and collars. You can change them out when they need to be washed or if you want a different look for the day.

Consider Style and Fashionable Choices

When you look for collars and leashes at places like Clearly Loved Pets, you can find fashionable and stylish choices for your pet. Your dog or cat might not care about the color or pattern of their collar and leash, but you probably do. Coordinating with your outfits, giving your pet their own unique sense of style, and picking different options based on seasons or other themes can be a lot of fun, and it’s easy to do with all the color choices and other options.

Ultimately, Leashes and Collars Are for Security

While it’s enjoyable to be fashion-conscious and you also want to stay within your budget for pet supplies, you need to make sure you get the right collars and leashes for good security. That’s the most valuable thing, at the end of the day, and it’s where the biggest part of your focus should lie when making your purchase.…

3 Tips For Dealing With Ferret Biting Problems

3 Tips For Dealing With Ferret Biting Problems

Anyone who has had a ferret as a pet will probably have been bitten at one time or another. As much as it can sound daunting it is generally not something to worry about and there are usually some simple reasons for them biting.

Let’s have a look at why some ferrets bite, so that you can better understand what’s happening, with a view to stopping it. And don’t worry, with the right care and attention you can stop this behavior.

The Youthful Biter

Youthful over-enthusiasm is the primary purpose for ferrets biting. Younger ferrets, notably if they are siblings, will tend in the direction of tough playfulness with lots of nipping and biting. This isn’t one thing to fret about, until it gets significantly heated.

What does need to be sorted out, early on is their willpower to include their owners in the play, by biting you the way they’d bite a fellow ferret.

There are lots of methods to stop a ferret from biting, however the main thing to ensure, is that you don’t use any aggression in the direction of your pet. At most, you should drag them calmly across the ground to discourage bad behavior. That is one thing a mother ferret would do.

But actually, it’s good to be gentle and considerate in stopping biting, as they’re just trying to include you in their games. It’s up to you to let them know that there’s acceptable play and not so acceptable play.

The Signaler

If a ferret is in discomfort or pain they will sometimes have hassle letting you know. So, instead of having a chat concerning the ache they’re in they’ll bite their owner. It’s a very direct method of getting attention, for sure. If your ferret isn’t younger and they begin biting all of a sudden, chances are you’ll want to pay close attention to them and consider any indicators of ill health.

The biting may be down to a change of circumstances. Be careful, specifically, for the introduction of new pets, including different ferrets. They’ll get nervous around guests or changes to their cages too. If in doubt, it’s likely that your ferret’s trying to inform you something if they start biting out of the blue.

The Persuader

If biting your owner got you what you needed, wouldn’t you make a habit of it? If a biting ferret is rewarded with treats or attention, in the hope of stopping the biting, then there’s no way the ferret will perceive this correctly. They see biting, followed by reward and see this as one of the best ways to get what they’re after. So, over time, they’ll see biting as a approach to persuade you to co-operate.

In case you let this type of pattern build up, for any size of time, it’s going to be quite a difficult cycle to break, though it’s not impossible.

It should become clear fairly quickly when you are conscious of these three habits. When you know what the issue is you can go about dealing with it.…

What is Proper Cat Care?

What is Proper Cat Care?

Every cat owner has the responsibility of caring for their cat and that can mean proper diet, exercise, grooming and cleanliness.  The basics of good cat care would be making sure your cat is well fed.  A good diet is very important in keeping your cat healthy.  Not all cat foods are created equal, and many breeders and veterinarians are now recommending organic cat foods rather than the typical grocery store brands.

Another cat keeping problem can be hairballs and this is another important part of cat care that is often overlooked or only seen as an inconvenience.  With a good healthy diet the likelihood of hairballs is greatly lessened and can be used as prevention because the body will be able to process the hair through the healthy intestinal track without having to feed your cat hairball remedies.

Having your cat professionally groomed every couple of months can be an integral part of cat care since this will lessen the chance of fleas and mites. Some cats loved to be shaved which can reduce the incidence of hairballs too.  If it’s done right, cats love being shaved in the summer time.

Cat care includes exercise and giving your cat or kitten toys to play with to keep them active and healthy.  Play cat and mouse with a cat toy is great fun for your cat.  And it’s imperative you give them a scratching post to stretch and sharpen their claws.  This will help in distracting from scratching on your furniture.

And last but not least the kitty litter box should be cleaned everyday in order to keep your cat interested in using it.  If it becomes too dirty, some cats will refuse to use it, and then you will have a big problem. Cleaning the box will keep your house smelling fresh too.  There is nothing worse than the cat box smell when you walk into the house.  It’s recommended to use a clumping litter so that it’s easy to scoop out.…

Things to Consider Before Choosing Your Cat Or Kitten

Things to Consider Before Choosing Your Cat Or Kitten

This article outlines important pointers to consider when choosing your cat or kittens, everything from colour to behaviour to health. When you want to get a pet you have to decide whether you want an adult cat or a kitten. A kitten needs to be fed three meals a day for the first few months, and they need lots of your attention, as much as you can give them. If you have a lot of furniture that you don’t want scratched you may prefer an older cat that has a calmer lifestyle, as a young kitten will go mad and you’ll find them sharpening their claws on your beloved favourite chair. (my cat Marley is 12 years old and she still gets caught with her claws in a chair and gets told off for her behaviour! When you get a kitten be sure to check vaccinations have been given, and if you adopt an adult cat that their boosters are all up to date and that all females spayed and males neutered unless you wish to breed with your cat.

Character of the cat

A healthy young adult cat will be alert and bright eyed. When you get a cat or kitten make sure it is from a reputable source such as a friend or an animal rescue or from a good breeder. This is what to look: A kitten should be playful and you should check their coat which should be smooth and not matted in any way, check for fleas and any other unwanted pests. their eyes should be bright, also check that the haws (third eyelids) don’t protrude. Ears should be clean and dry and free from wax inside. Whilst checking mouth make sure gums are pink and teeth white and no gum inflammation present. it is also a good idea to check kittens anal area for signs of diarrhea and cleanliness. The abdomen should be checked for sign of a hernia detected by running your hand gently under the kittens abdomen, if any lumps are found, a trip to your vet is recommended for piece of mind. Your kitten should be able to move freely and play with out any problems but if it is lame you will notice this if you observe your kitten moving around. It is best to choose a cat /kitten that is happy and inquisitive and reacts positively to being handled and stroked.

Longhairs

If you choose a longhair you must be able to set aside time for daily grooming sessions. If a cat like this is neglected the fur becomes matted and knots form and the poor cat will end up having his fur cut or even shaved ( from a lack of grooming from owner) by a professional vet. So you really need to consider very carefully whether you can commit yourself to grooming a cat with long hair everyday before you take on a longhaired cat. Longhairs are very laid back by nature and make loyal an loving pets.…

How To Make Your New Kitten Comfortable In Your Home

How To Make Your New Kitten Comfortable In Your Home

When you bring home a new pet, it’s an exciting experience. You have a new addition to your home to love and grow to appreciate. When you have a new kitten, there are times when it’s hard for the cat to really become more comfortable with the new home and family. Find out what you can do that will help your kitten be more comfortable.

First of all, be prepared beforehand. Have everything ready before the cat arrives so that they don’t have to wait on anything. The bed is especially important since your kitten will want to sleep often. Make sure it’s prepared and ready to be used.

Show affection for your cat. Kittens are not used to be handled at all. They must be trained early to enjoy affection else they might not ever like this. Hold the kitten in your lap. Pet your cat. Show affection in whatever ways that you can.

Be very gentle if the cat is showing signs of nervousness. Don’t tug or pull at the cat. Don’t force the cat into a place that he or she doesn’t feel comfortable with. Be gentle with your voice if the kitten is not doing anything wrong.

You might have to keep your new kitten away from other animals in the house that are much larger. These larger pets can intimidate the new kitten quite a bit.

Sometimes you will have to leave your new kitten alone. This is not just good for sleep but cats need their space. If your kitten feels smothered, it can develop habits of wanting to avoid you.

Don’t make the huge mistake of letting your cat be cute and avoiding discipline. You might like how they look, but the discipline needs to start from day one else you will have ongoing behavioral problems.…

How to Care For a Day-Old Kitten

Kittens are usually cared for by heir moms. However, like all things in nature, Darwinianism kicks in and only few of the offspring will survive. I have encountered twice the particular case of a cat who simply will not care for her babies, being equally disinterested in whether they live or die. So for the best part of the next four weeks I acted like a nursing cat mother for three little kittens. Needless to say, when they’re a few hours old, they’re hardly bigger than a very small mouse each.

There’s two things they need to survive: warmth and food. You can solve the first issue with a couple of 2 litres plastic bottles filled with hot water that you put it in their nesting place. A shoe box will suffice for that. Also, try making them comfortable by adding a towel or any cloth you won’t need ever again so they have a soft floor. The water will need changing every few hours, depending on how fast it will cool.

Next issue is a bit of a nuisance. You’ll have to buy a baby bottle for kittens. There are many available at pet shops, you cannot improvise around it, trust me on that, I’ve tried. The thing that came nerare to a baby bottle was a 2ml syringe, but you run the risk of pumping too fast and choking them. Plus, they can’t draw from it. So go get the baby bottle. Then for the food. You can either buy special powder milk that has all the surplus they need from a lactating mother, just ask the veterinarian for it, or use your own milk from the store. Either way is fine, the powder milk is pricey but better, but they won’t die for the lack of it. Next buy eggs, a whole basket of them, you’re going to need them. Break an egg and clear the yolk. Only the yolk! Put the yolk in a cup. Add a bit of milk and mix. Then add a spoon of honey and milk up to about 200ml and mix. Honey helps the kittens’ digestion a lot, it’s not just for the taste of it. When you have about 200ml of mixed product make sure it’s warm and fill up the baby bottle. Then pick each of them up and start feeding them. You’ll have to be patient, although at first they’re probably be starving and will draw like there’s no tomorrow. You will have to repeat that every three hours and twice at night.

My advice is to have more food mixed so you only have to warm it, it saves a lot of time not having to mix it all each and every time they need feeding. After four weeks they will probably learn to drink by themselves and you’re off the hook, although there’s no timeframe guaranteed about that. I had one crazy kitten who refused to let go of the baby bottle for three months!

If you follow these steps it will be hard on your part but your kittens WILL live. Constant feeding and warmth is all there really is to it. And patience.…

Don’t Feed This to a Ferret!

Don’t Feed This to a Ferret!

Ferrets can be finicky eaters, but by offering them a high quality diet they will not only eat well, they will thrive. Ferrets can develop severe health troubles meals that are low in nutritional value, which has been shown to cause sickness and shortened life expectancies. It is important to give foods that will help them remain dynamic and healthy during their lives. As a final thought, it has always been interesting to me that a ferret will decline to consume frozen meat, but then turn right around and eat furnishings or plastic toys.

If you’re on a tiny budget and looking for a way to save some cash, providing your animal inexpensive food is typically not the best way to save. Yes, it will probably be more costly purchasing the high quality brands, but in view of the fact that ferrets eat so little food at each meal, your total food expenditure will still be minuscule.

Ferrets are small and will not eat very much at any one sitting, and as a result should be given two or three smaller meals each day instead of one big meal. Although they sleep as much as 20 hours every day, they are extremely lively creatures while awake and will certainly burn a large amount of calories during their active periods. For this reason they must be offered a high calorie diet if they are to continue being healthy.

You can feed your ferret dry or moist types of meals. Moist may be treasured slightly more, but dry has lots of advantages. You can’t leave moist food in their cage for longer than one hour, because it won’t stay good for any longer than this. Once it gets old it must be taken out of the cage and thrown away. Conversely, you don’t have this worry with dry pellets because it will stay good for days. This will probably cut the feed bill, because none of the dry food will be wasted. Another advantage to dry pellets is they will help keep a ferret’s teeth clean.

Ferrets will derive satisfaction from a yummy snack now and then, but it is important not to overdue it. Since they will only eat a minute amount at a meal, they can fill up on snacks quickly and then reject their high quality meal. This can in due course lead to nutritional deficiencies that can cause ill health and a loss of vibrancy.

Tasty treats are never a necessity, but if you make a decision to provide treats, make sure you do it in moderation. The finest snacks are high protein foods such as cooked eggs and meat. Foods like candy and fruits that are high in carbohydrates are not first-class nutritional snacks. These can lead to health issues and a loss of energy and vitality.

Feeding your pet nutritious meals, high in protein and fat while low in carbohydrates, is a crucial factor in a ferret’s overall health. Giving them foods that are lacking in nutritional content can cause severe health problems and a decreased life expectancy. If you love your ferret, demonstrate you care by offering a high quality well-balanced diet.…

How To Feed Kittens

How To Feed Kittens

Taking care of kittens is just like taking care of a human baby. You have to keep a careful watch on everything right from the food you give it to its health and grooming. Feeding kittens can either be an easy process or not, depending on the temperament and the state of your kitten. A kitten may or may not be weaned and thus the food would be different in each case. Training a kitten to get accustomed to her food is a time consuming process and you should not rush about doing it.

In order to provide better care and nourishment for your kitten, it is necessary to know how to care for it at every stage of its growth. This article examines some of the things that all new kitten owners should know.

Weaned Kittens

Here are some points that you should note if you are feeding kittens that are already weaned:

– You have to start feeding the kitten with dry food. However, the food has to be a little moistened, but with water and not cow’s milk.

– You have to continue this food habit until the kitten is about five to six months old. After six months, you can start training a kitten to feed on canned food. But remember to supplement it with kitten chow.

– Continue to provide her with kitten food for another six to eight months and then you can start to gradually get your pet habituated with adult cat canned or dry food.

Unweaned Kittens

Taking care of the unweaned kitten is a little bit tougher than the former. This is because in such a case, you have to replace what its mother would have done to feed it. Here are some steps that you should follow:

– First, take the kitten to a vet. Your vet will be able to guide you with what you need to follow for feeding kittens that are unweaned.

– For the first three weeks, you have to feed it with specific kitten formula and at an interval of every 2-3 hours.

– After three weeks, the frequency will diminish and you can feed the kitten after every 6 hours.

– After eight weeks, you have to start the unweaning process and then start feeding it with moistened dry food.

We hope this article is useful to you if you are in the process of training a kitten to get accustomed to her food. Good luck!…

Honoring Animals, Nature, and Spirit

I love all of Doreen Virtue’s books. She is truly a loving spirit and a pure channel. Although she is best known for her angelic messages, she is actually a Universal Communicator, which means she can communicate with the spirits of all life forms.
In her book, “Healing With the Fairies,” Doreen wrote something that has always stayed with me. The Nature Angels, also known as Fairies, told her that animals and plants are happy to serve the Greater Good. They told her that most animals and plants don’t really mind being used for service or for food. What they feel so very sad about is how they are mistreated and devalued by most humans.
Most of us want to feel that our lives have meaning, and that we have contributed something for a greater cause. Animals and plants feel that way, too. Like us, they want to be appreciated for who they are and the service they give. Just like we do.
If animals are treated kindly during life, and honored during death, then they will naturally impart love, health, and blessings upon those who partake of them. Sadly, as it is, most of us are actually ingesting fear and pain when we eat, especially when we eat meat. It doesn’t have to be this way. It wasn’t meant to be this way. Native Americans knew the truth of this, and honoring animals and Nature was a very important part of life for them. Many Native Americans and other indigenous peoples are remembering their heritage, and they are teaching the world ways to live in harmony with our Earth.
Some of us choose to live more consciously than others. But we all know the difference between kindness and cruelty. And each of us can make a huge difference in our world by making small adjustments in our habits. We can begin here and now, as easily as making a choice, to make this a Kinder World.
Here are some simple things each of us can do. You can just start with one or two, and then add others as it feels right to you. Every little bit helps.…

Kitten Heels

Kitten Heels

Kitten heels are a variation of the stiletto heel but with a slight twist. The heels on this particular type of shoe are usually between 1- 2 inches although heels a little higher are also seen in department stores. The heels are usually tapered and the point of the heel sits a bit in from the shoe’s edge. Kitten heels can be found on sandals. Although they are not as high as the stiletto, they offer the sex appeal of the stiletto without the extreme height. Kitten heels were first introduced in the 1950’s for girls who were just entering their teenage years as high heels were deemed unseemly for younger girls.

They were thought of as ‘trainer heels’ in the US for these girls in preparation for the higher heels they would start wearing as they grew older. Soon, older girls started wearing them and the trend caught on. However, their popularity waned soon after before a brief surge in popularity in the 1980’s. Famous shoe designers such as Manolo Blahnik brought the kitten heel on to the runways of Europe along with his amazing stiletto collection. They are very versatile as they can be worn with outfits ranging from dresses, skirts, suits and even shorts.

They can be found in solid colors, pastel shades, exotic prints and trendy designs. The materials used for these shoes commonly include leather, plastic, suede, fabric and velvet. You can find kitten heels on sandals, boots, pumps, open-toed shoes as well as sling-backs. Dresses look demure yet sexy when paired with these shoes that have 1, 2 or more straps on them. Kitten heels can be dressed up or dressed down and you can wear them for work or for parties. They are great for tall women who prefer not to tower over everybody and look equally good on shorter women who don’t want the extreme height that stiletto’s offer.

With kitten heels, there is less strain on the foot and you can wear them quite comfortably for longer periods of time. When buying kitten heels or any shoes for that matter, it is important to try them on if you are at a store. Walk around in them and if you feel it pinching your feet, try a bigger size. The style of the shoe can affect your shoe size and you may find that with different shoe styles, you might need different sizes. You can find kitten heels online where you will undoubtedly find a much bigger range of choices. You may also find that they are cheaper because these online retailers do not have the added expense of stocking a physical store.

Before placing an order, you may want to try on a similar pair of shoes at a store first. However, most of the online stores do take returns and that could be a viable option if you are not able to go to a store. In the end, kitten heels offer comfort and versatility to those that are tired of the pain that usually comes with wearing high heels for prolonged periods of time.…

A Ferret Diet That Won’t Tolerate Frozen Fish

A Ferret Diet That Won’t Tolerate Frozen Fish

If you want to give your ferret the best care possible, giving him an actual ferret diet is important. In times past, people have used cat food, especially high quality cat food. This has worked just fine, but today you can get food that’s actually built for the optimal ferret diet.

There’s no doubt that it’s cheaper to use cat food. However, these little guy sleep most of the day. And when they’re away and not playing, they don’t really eat that much. In the end, you’ll wind up spending less to feed a ferret than you would a cat anyway. Plus, if you give them quality food, you won’t need to lean on supplements. You’ll still likely want to give them treats. But you should have a healthier animal all around.

I want to share some thing to keep in mind when thinking through a well-rounded ferret diet. First, these guys are carnivores, so they want meat. However, they can do well with less fiber and a smaller carbohydrate intake. Also, it’s a good idea to avoid food made with frozen meats, like some unsatisfactorily processed fish. Even if you do not have a very picky eater, getting the combination of ingredients in your ferret diet is what will help them live as long as possible.

The protein and fat level is what distinguishes many cat foods from a proper ferret diet. Ideal protein is about 35-40% and proper fat content is in the low 20’s up to about 30%. Two percent fiber is good. In a perfect world, you’d be looking for approximately 21 amino acids and 7% or so ash. Carbohydrates can come from rice flower and brewer’s yeast. Understand this is the ultimate ferret diet, but the availability of commercial foods makes it quite easy.

Mastering the proper ferret diet isn’t just about what to feed. As for scheduling, it’s a good idea to feed 2 or more times a day so you spread their calorie intake. If you feed a moist food, or wet dry food, then you don’t want to leave the portion out for longer than an hour. By contrast, dry pellets keep just fine and can be left in the cage all the time if you prefer free-feeding. The dry food does have the added advantage of helping keep their teeth clean. And, as with any captive animal, one of the most important things is that they have access to clean, fresh water. This is especially true if you make dry food the centerpiece of the ferret diet.

Earlier I mentioned treats, and it’s a good idea to figure out how snacks factor in to the ideal ferret diet. Again, with healthy food choices, you will not need supplements. However, treats are still not only fun, but also useful for things such as litter box training. When it comes to treats, I would keep the healthy theme as you build upon your ferret diet. They actually love meat, of course, as well as cooked eggs. Just be sure to avoid sugary and other foods, like candy, fruits, nuts, and dairy products. These items can plague their digestive system. On top of that, they could end up with hypoglycemia, diarrhea, obesity, and they could even become food snobs and reject the healthy meals you try to dish up. You may be surprised to learn that you should also stay away from grains and vegetables. Purchasing healthy treats, along with the core ferret diet, will keep you safe.…

African Grey Parrots And Stress

The grey parrots may have many behavioral problems and most of them are caused by the human?s lack of understanding that it is first of all a prey bird and has little to do with a life in captivity. Many people fail to understand that and won?t allow that bird to manifest like a bird.

The grey parrots are exotic birds and come from strange lands. As strange as we find those lands, the same is for the parrots. They are not accustomed with the habits, the language or any other form of communication. A person should accept the parrot because the parrot also tries to understand the human behavior and tries to understand and live in peace with the human being.

Grey parrots caught in the wild are not aggressive when they are in a pair or breeding. They feel fear, which is justified, when they feel the presence of a human being, but they don?t have violent reactions. Usually, they share food, they play and they interact in a non ? violent manner. Strangely, the grey parrots who act more violently while breeding or in pairs are the domestic ones.

The domestic grey parrots have a few reasons to become aggressive:

* They loose the respect and consideration for themselves when they are in captivity.

* They loose the desire to live safe.

* They are affected by human aggression because avian species knows that pain or aggression mean death. Those animals are not used to touches, pokes, pushes, chasing, shaking or striking. Those actions are frightening and dangerous for the parrots.

* Their self confidence, their trust and their comfort are shattered if they are intimidated. Standing over them, or staring at them may have a strong impact on the birds.

* A grey parrot will never trust a person who tries to dominate him or control small aspects of the nature.

* Just as any human being, a grey parrot won?t trust a person who uses sensory deprivation as a mean of punishment for misbehavior.

A comparison between a wild animal and a domestic one would fail from the beginning in every way especially when it comes to birds, which are usually predators. Genetic inheritance eradication would require thousands of generations of selective breeding to obtain a domestic bird like a grey parrot and it is not always possible.

A bird that becomes stressed will start self mutilating or biting or will develop phobias. There are many factors that could induce stress to a bird. When it comes to grey parrots, a person should know what actions stress the bird and try to avoid them in order to keep the trust of the pet.

The grey parrots are intelligent and sensitive birds and they have the tendency to find in the human caregiver the qualities of a teacher, parental figure and mentor. They get attached to their caregiver and expect to be treated with respect and compassion. This is a method that works as well for birds as it does for humans or dogs.…

Ferrets Care – Dos & Don’ts

Ferrets Care – Dos & Don’ts

Already have your ferret at home? Congratulations on becoming an owner. Being a proud owner of a ferret also comes with high responsibilities. So what should you do to provide the right kind of ferrets care? Here are some Dos and Don’ts for you:

Dos

o Provide a comfortable home – if you have a cage for your ferret, make sure that it is spacious enough for them to live in. And since they spend most of their time sleeping, it is important to make it comfortable and good for taking a rest. Provide the cage flooring with beddings to cover the gaps, this is to prevent the ferret from getting stuck and possibly injuring themselves. You must also have a sleeping sack for the ferret to sleep in; when the climate is cold, ferrets like to sleep inside to keep themselves warm. This helps in maintaining their body’s natural temperature. And when the temperature is warm, it is also a good thing to have a ferret hammock setup inside the cage. They would be sleeping here to have a good air circulation. It would also be good to have a water bottle for them to easily drink water whenever they need it. It would also be good to provide dark area in the cage to shade the ferret from sunlight and artificial lights.

o Ferret Proofing – it is making sure that your home doesn’t have small holes, cracks or crevices that the ferret could crawl into and get itself hurt. If you find any of these, patch them up. You would also need to check your electricity wirings, make sure that the ferret can’t reach them. You would need to buy safety covers to protect your electrical outlets and also cover your electrical wirings if possible. If you can’t do this yourself, it would be good to hire an expert to setup this stuff for you.

o Ferrets Diet – the food that we provide them should be high in protein and fat as these two nutrients are the basic needs of their bodies. It is up to you to decide if you would want to give a single branded food or would want to provide a variety of diets. As long as the diet provides 35% protein and 20% fat.

o Yearly Checkup & Vaccinations – having a continuous checkup with the vet helps prevent the ferret from acquiring diseases by taking their regular vaccinations. And it is also good to detect symptoms of early stages of sickness.

Don’ts

o Snacks – when you give your pet snacks, make sure that you avoid fruits and sweet ones. These could cause obesity, tooth decay and also could put your ferret in danger. A disease that is common in ferrets called insulinoma is often caused by feeding sweet snacks and food. If you would want to give your ferret a reward, it is recommended to give them cooked eggs instead; it is good and beneficial to them.

o Dairy Products – should be avoided as well.

o Nuts and Nuts products cause nutritional problems to ferrets and should not be given.

o Grains & Vegetables are indigestible to ferrets. It is better to avoid giving these kinds of food.

o Onions are poisonous to ferrets, definitely must avoid adding this ingredient to the food that you provide them.

By knowing what we should do and what to avoid, we are equipping ourselves with knowledge in keeping our ferret healthy and able to live a happy and longer life.…

My Dog Has A Fear Of The Leash. Heres What To Do…

Exercise is a major part of our dogs? lives.

Cesar Millan, the ?Dog Whisperer?, tells us that to maintain a healthy relationship with our beloved pooches, that relationship should consist of 50% physical exercise, 25% discipline, and 25% affection. That?s a lot of exercise! In order for us to be able to enjoy exercising our dogs as much as they need, it?s important for them to behave well both on the lead. Unfortunately, there are many dogs out there who are afraid of the leash itself ? resulting in neurotic, fearful, submissive behavior whenever the lead comes out. In this newsletter, we?ll take a look at the most effective way to deal with fear of the leash.

Fear of the Leash

The majority of the time, the sight of the leash is enough to bring on a fit of joy ? the dog knows that leash = walk, and reacts accordingly.

For some dogs, though, the leash connotes fear and submissiveness more than anything else. Perhaps the leash was used in a negative way with a previous owner ? as a tool for dragging the dog around. Perhaps it was used to confine the dog for long hours at a time. In some extreme cases, dogs have even been whipped with the leash as punishment. Or perhaps your dog is just very highly strung, and is prone to developing phobias seemingly arbitrarily. Although fear of the leash can have a severely negative impact on your walks with your dog, the good news is that it?s easy to cure.

You just need some patience and some basic equipment.

What you?ll need A leash, made of webbing or leather. Approximately 5 feet (1.25 meters) is a good length, as it enables control without risk of the dog getting tangled in the leash when out walking. Chain-link leashes aren?t recommended, as they?re hard on the hands ? and also can flick the dog in the face, which isn?t something you?d want to inflict on any dog, let alone one that?s suffering from fear of the leash! – A good-quality collar, again made of leather or nylon webbing. If you?re using one with a snap-lock, make sure it?s safety-approved and won?t come undone under pressure. Slip-chain collars (also known as ?choke-chains? or ?check-chains?) should never be used on an unattended dog, as they?re a training tool, not a real collar. – A little bit of time, and a little bit of patience.

What to Do

* Your aim here is to accustom your dog to the lead a little bit at a time, keeping him well within his comfort zone at each step of the way. Because he?s already got a fear of the leash, some discomfort in its presence is to be expected, but watch out for signs of extreme fear:

* hyperventilating,

* drooling,

* submissive urination,

* rolling eyes (often showing the whites).

So step one: remember to take baby steps at all times!

* If he?s really afraid of the leash, you?ll need to accustom him to it very slowly indeed.

* Practice leaving it out in full view, preferably in ?fun? places: next to his food bowl, in preferred play areas, near his bed.

* Once he?s stopped reacting to the sight of it, introduce the leash to him in a more active manner. You can do this by wrapping it around your hand as you pet and groom him.

* Hold the leash in your hand as you prepare his food; sit by him and stroke him, with the leash wrapped around your hand, as he eats. Keep this up until he?s stopped showing any signs of discomfort ? it may take some time, but remember that you?re aiming to accustom him comfortably to the leash. Any rushing is counterproductive.

* When he?s not showing any signs of nervousness with this level of progress, you can start attaching the leash to his collar.

* Put him in a sit-stay, using a firm, calm voice, and clip the leash on. Don?t make a big deal out of it: your dog will take his emotional and psychological cues from your behavior. If you act as though it?s not a big deal, he?ll follow your lead.

* Once the leash is on, give him some time to get used to the sensation of something hanging off his neck. He may get a little panicky at this stage, and start pawing at his neck and trying to rub the leash off along the ground. If he?s showing signs of nervousness, distract him with a game: a short game of tug-o?-war (providing he knows to drop the toy when you?ve had enough) is a good idea; if he can run without getting tangled in the leash, play a short game of fetch; or, …

Choosing a Kitten From a Litter

Choosing a Kitten From a Litter

If you entered room full of kittens, with their tiny meows and adoring blue eyes, it would be very difficult to choose one over another. All kittens are quite simply adorable. However if you are in the process of looking for and choosing a new kitten, you should only consider taking home a healthy one.

Your heart may go out to the runt of the litter, or the helpless 5 week old kitten abandoned by its mother, but unless you are experienced in the art of cat care, choosing a weak kitten could bring you nothing but heartache over the coming weeks and months.

Ideally a kitten should remain with its mother until the age of 8 weeks. Certainly he or she should not be taken away from their mother’s side before the age of 6 weeks. A kitten is totally dependant on its mother’s milk for the first 4 weeks of its life. This is the best and most natural way for the kitten to gain all the valuable nutrients needed for a healthy adulthood.

From 4 weeks onwards, the kitten may start to take very small amounts of wet and dry kitten food, but it isn’t until the age of 6 – 8 weeks that he or she will be eating independently.

If you can see your new kitten with its mother and siblings before you purchase, you will get an instant overall picture of the state of health of both the mother and her litter. This is a good starting point in assessing how healthy your kitten is generally.

There are, however a number of more specific signs you can and should look out for before you take a kitten home:

• The kitten should be lively, playful and responsive.

• The kitten’s eyes should be bright and clear with no discharge.

• The kitten should respond quickly to sound, even when sleeping. His or her ears should be clean and free of discharge.

• The kitten should have a clean, dry tail with no signs of soreness around the anus.

• Check the kitten is not too thin and that its stomach is not distended or unduly sensitive.

• Check the kitten’s skin for traces of fleas. This can easily be spotted as the kitten will have small black grit like traces along its spine and tummy and around its ears. If the kitten does have fleas, a vet will be able to provide you with the correct treatment for instant administration.

• Check the kitten does not have a runny nose.

• The kitten should be able to pass urine and faeces without pain or effort.

All kittens are sweet little bundles of fluff, but try to see beyond the cute exterior if this is the first time you have owned a kitten. A healthy kitten is more likely to grow into a healthy cat. And generally speaking, a healthy cat will go on to live, and be a valuable member of your family for 15 – 20 years or more.

Looking to Buy a Cat? 4 Valuable Tips For Choosing the Right Kitty

Looking to Buy a Cat? 4 Valuable Tips For Choosing the Right Kitty

Are you looking to buy a cat? While bringing home a cute kitten can be really enjoyable, there are quite a few factors you have to consider before making the big decision. You should understand that having any pet is a huge responsibility and may want to consider carefully if you are ready to shoulder them. You will also have to buy a cat that will be able to adjust to your lifestyle. If you are ready, here some four valuable tips to choose the right cat for yourself.

Breed

When considering the breed of cat, the first thing to do is to list down your own preferences. Do you like long haired cats or would prefer to have a short coated cat? Do you have any preference regarding the color of your cat? Write down the answers to these questions and when you are ready, start collecting information on the behavioral traits and personalities of the different breeds. It will help you to zero in on the most suitable breed for you.

Choosing a Cattery

This is the second step to buy a cat. For getting a healthy purebred kitten of your choice, you must first take the time to choose the right cattery. You can start by collecting references and from seeking the help of vets or breed owners to locate a reputable cattery. Before you visit them and get carried away with the cute kitties on display, ask the breeders about their professional qualifications, how long they have been running the cattery, specific information and vaccination about the breed that you would like to have etc. After getting your queries answered, visit the cattery and choose your kitten.

Cost

Owning a pet is just like adding a new member to your family. So be ready to spend a generous amount of money on your cat for its well being. You will have to spend on its food, medication, grooming products as well as treats such as outdoor cat enclosures and toys. It may easily cost you $1000 per year. So, before bringing a cat home, consider whether you are ready to commit this amount.

Cat Health and Training

Before you buy a cat, also consider its health. Preferably, you should go for an active and curious kitten and not for one that has a weak appearance or is overly afraid of your presence. However, kittens that are too active will require more attention and if you are not keen on training a kitten, you may consider buying a grown up cat that’s already calm and trained to some extent.…

Judging The Capacity of The Electric Dog Fence

The verdict is the fact that an electric powered Dog fence is one of the safest methods of dog containment available in the market. This is a more reliable choice more than a physical fence in most cases. You will find various ways that electric fences guarantee the well-being of pets.

Emphasize the huge benefits

You should train your pet correctly to utilize the electrical dog fence in order that the animal can have a good knowledge of the machine. Ideally, the education procedure would take from one-four weeks with respect to the moods of the dog and the way you’ll be able to pursue the course program.

Most dogs react to the commands of these trainers positively particularly if the latter is adept at managing the wayward behaviour of these pets. Positive reinforcement is also reported to be more potent compared to the averse design of training. You’ll have to have patience using the dog and discover how to use the collar that forms section of the package.

The electric dog fence operates by establishing proper border lines which might be quite different from the conventional concrete or steel barriers. In a nutshell, it’s a greater portion of training implement rather than the type of containment for your animal.

Dogs should be taught to achieve expertise in their areas and limitations. They need to realize that it isn’t correct so they can wander out of the yard in spite of the deficiency of an actual physical obstruction. Inside the same token, in the event the electric fence stops working as well as in the event the dog don’t wear the collar, your pet might be used not to stray from its master’s home or property. This can be attained from the training process.

The electric dog fence also prevents dogs from digging holes around the yard or jumping over the imaginary fence structure. Whether it attempts to cross the limit, your pet turns into a warning including mild static pulse or light shock.

Some fences are even transportable to make certain pet safety during camping trips or out-of-town excursions plus specific situations the place where a dog might neglect to comprehend its normal boundaries. The dog fence might help your new puppy understand its restrictions or up to where it can experiment. It keeps your dog safe from hazards for example speeding cars, hostile people and animals.

There isn’t doubt over it that there is no better alternative for that sturdy and easy-on-the-pocket electric fence.…

Cat Behavior Training – Effectively School Your Feline With These 4 Tips

Cat Behavior Training – Effectively School Your Feline With These 4 Tips

Cats are fascinating and adorable creatures that offer an unrivaled companionship. But there’s more to them than just purring and curling up in your lap. They are also independent and self possessed, which means it can be difficult when it comes to cat behavior training. However, don’t give up hope. It’s not an impossible feat. Here are some things to keep in mind when trying to school your feline.

THEY ACT UP WHEN THEY’RE BORED

When felines are bored, they will do naughty things in order to work off excess energy. Racing up and down the stairs, jumping on counters and knocking things down are only the tip of the iceberg. This can be resolved by spending more time with your pet. Playing with him will not only relieve him of his boredom, but also create a stronger bond.

REPRIMANDING DOESN’T WORK

Here’s the deal, cats really don’t care if you punish them. Dog owners know that punishing them will help change their bad manners. Not so with these frisky fur balls. As a result, reprimanding your cat is often an ineffective tactic. He will learn that getting caught while misbehaving brings about some awful reactions and will simply learn to hide it better and do it when you’re not around.

ENCOURAGE GOOD BEHAVIOR

When it comes to cat behavior training, it’s far easier to reward your kitty when you see him performing a right behavior. This is called operative conditioning. Anything you want him to do should be rewarding, enjoyable and pleasant. Whenever he does something positive, reinforce this good behavior with praise, petting and a couple of treats.

REMOVE THE AGGRESSOR, REWARD THE VICTIM

If you live in a multi cat household, you’ve probably seen your share of “cat fights”. Felines are territorial by nature and will occasionally get into scuffles over their domain. If you witness such a battle, the first thing to do is disengage them. However, don’t try to do this physically. You could get severely injured, since they may not recognize you in the heat of emotion. One of the best cat behavior training tools is a spray bottle. Use this to squirt the aggressor while trying to avoid the victim. Then, confine the “bully” in a separate room and reward the innocent pet. Give him a treat or free roam of the house. Try to keep them as supervised as possible when you reunite them again.

Cat behavior training isn’t hard at all. It just takes a little bit of patience. With the proper tools, you can be on your way to a more fulfilling relationship for the both of you.…

24 Ferret Facts

24 Ferret Facts

Here are 24 pieces of information that will aid you in understanding who and what ferrets are. To properly care for your pet ferret you need to know these facts.

Ferrets…

1….share genetics with weasels, otters, badgers, skunks and minks. They are not rodents.

be thought of as somewhere between cats and dogs but smaller.

playful like puppies – except they never grow out of it.

be trained to do anything a dog can do. They can be litter box trained like a cat.

people oriented rather than person oriented. They are able to bond with a number of humans over the course of their lifetimes although its can take up to a year to complete the bonding process..

cross species social. They enjoy being with other ferrets, humans, dogs and cats. Ferrets do not do well with mice, birds or other small animals.

primarily indoor pets. They should be in a harness and on a leash if outside.

not carriers of rabies. There is no record of a human ever contracting rabies from a ferret.

not noisy creatures. They chitter when excited.

10….smell like ferrets. A neutered ferret does not have an offensive smell. Regular cleaning of his cage and bedding will help keep smells under control.

relatively poor eyesight compensated for by acute senses of smell and hearing.

expectancy is 6-8 years although they can live up to twice that length of time.

13. Baby ferrets are called kits, females are jills and males are hobs.

14. Males tend to be about 16 inches long and weigh nearly 3 pounds. Females grow to around 12 inches and weigh in at one and a half pounds or so.

to sleep 15-20 hours per day. They are crepuscular, i.e. most active just before dawn and just after dusk.

very energetic and love to play.

good pets and are people-friendly.

18….require more attention than cats. They are more likely to “have an accident” and miss their litter box than cats.

not a good pet for families with small children under the age of six.

extremely inquisitive and will attempt to explore everything in their environment. Ferret-proofing a room for them to run around in is a must.

chew things. The danger is they may swallow small pieces and experience intestinal blockage – an emergency visit to the veterinarian.

illegal in Hawaii and California. Many municipalities have made ownership of ferrets a crime. Their illegality stems from misinformation. First, many consider ferrets to be wild animals like raccoon or skunk. History shows that ferrets have been domesticated for over two millennia. Second, domesticated ferrets offer no rabies threat. If a ferret contracts rabies (rare due to almost universal vaccination against it), it tends to die before it is capable of passing it on to others. As of this date, records indicate that no human has contracted rabies from a ferret in the United States. Third, the danger of escaped or abandoned ferrets forming feral communities is minimal. Most domesticated ferrets are neutered. Their ability to survive in the wild is almost zero. An escaped ferret will be dead within 72 hours of release into the wild. There is no evidence of even one feral ferret community in the U.S.

to spend a significant amount of time outside their cages in a supervised environment.

to make regular visits to the veterinarian for shots and annual checkups.…
