Pet Insurance Comparison: When Should I Start My Pets Insurance?

Pet Insurance Comparison: When Should I Start My Pets Insurance?

The simple answer is as soon after they’re born as possible. It is best to take them to the vet soon and have a check up, and get them registered with date of birth etc. Treat this as you would with a new born baby. Get the birth registered and have your baby checked out and at the same time sort out their pet insurance. Reason is that you never know when there might be a problem. You never know when something will turn up and if anything becomes a pre-existing condition then you may not be able to insure them.

Then you could either have to pay out or have them put down which wouldn’t be a choice anyone would gladly face. So get your pet insured from the get go. I say as soon as they’re born but it will more likely be the week that you acquire them because, assuming you’re not the breeder, then you won’t get your pet until they’re ready to leave their mother. Even so, you should register their birthday for two good reasons: you will know how old they are in 10 years time and not have to think: “When did we get her, was it 8 years? No I’m sure it was more” etc. and the other more important reason is you can celebrate their birthday as another member of the family, which is fun!

The first examination is also important. Some breeds are prone to their own diseases and these are not always easy to spot. When we got our Westie, the breeder was not happy for us to handle the puppy because of cross infections, but she had a skin disease which,we found out, they’re prone to and we never picked that up because we never handled the puppy. This was a chronic disease which lasted her whole life and cost us dearly because we didn’t have pet insurance, but a vet would have noticed it straight away and maybe nipped it in the bud, but maybe that’s a good reason to take out the insurance before the first examination just in case.…

Common Genetic And Non-Genetic Cat Health Problems

Common Genetic And Non-Genetic Cat Health Problems

If you are a new pet owner or are planning on getting a kitten, you should be aware that it is pretty normal for your kitty to fall ill every once in a while. However, cats are also prone to several genetic ailments and other serious diseases. As a cat owner, it would help you to know about some of these more common diseases. Though being cautious while getting a kitten can help you avoid a few genetic disorders, there are some cat health problems that you cannot prevent.

A majority of cats are vulnerable to worms. The presence of ringworms, hookworms, roundworms or tapeworms may make your cat suffer from stomach ache and vomiting. The presence of these worms may also cause discoloration of her coat and give her a bloated tummy. But you need not worry too much about these conditions as there are various medicines that can successfully cure such problems.

Cats love to groom themselves. However this frequent grooming can also result in hairball problems. While grooming themselves, cats often gulp hairs that remain undigested. Later, cats vomit these hairs out as hairballs.

Fleas too may bother your cats. These fleas would feed on the blood of your loving pet and too many fleas can also make it anemic. This uncomfortable situation may cause it to scratch itself more often, thus resulting in skin diseases. Keep a close watch on your pet and take her to a vet before the infestation gets serious.

Genetic cat health problems may include some kinds of kidney diseases, blindness and many others. Many Abyssinian cats are born with retinal dystrophy, progressive retinal atrophy and familial amyloidosis. Burmese cats are genetically more prone to diabetes, glaucoma and hypokalaemic myopathy. Gingivitis is another genetic condition that is present in many cats.

Despite their adorable appearance, even Persian cats have their share of genetic illnesses. The major genetic disorders that this breed suffers from include Chediak-Higashi syndrome, dystocia, progressive retinal atrophy and corneal sequestrum.

The list of cat health problems also includes feline leukemia. Unfortunately there is no permanent medication for this terminal illness and vomiting and weakness are some of its symptoms. Cats can also develop urinary tract infections and conjunctivitis. Injuries to the inner ear and ear mites can cause ear infection in cats. You should check the ears of your cat on a regular basis during her grooming sessions.

If your cat is falling ill, do not panic and remember to consult a vet or any reputable resource as soon as possible to prevent her condition from worsening. Good luck!…

Treating Ferret Fleas

Treating Ferret Fleas

If you own a ferret, fleas are a common problem your ferrets may encounter. Since these are parasites that suck the blood of your pet, it is imperative to know some important information about it so you can take suitable steps to remove them as well as avoid reinfestation. More than getting rid of it you need to know how to maintain your pet’s health and keep fleas away.

In warm and humid conditions, fleas multiply rapidly. What they cannot survive is hot or cold weather or high altitudes. They also cannot see very well owing to their bad eyesight. Since they respond to light, therefore light colored fur of the ferret is an attractive haven for the fleas to infest.

The blood sucker causes ferret anemia. Ferrets, being allergic, lose hair and develop rashes and an itchy skin. The tiny, lovable creature may well die if it is not treated. They must be given medical treatment and kept clean to get rid of it.

You can find products such as sprays, powders, oral suspensions, topical applications, shampoos and bombs made of chemicals that keep out fleas. An effective remedial application is Pyrethrum which repels fleas. Since they have nerve endings, post-synaptic products like Avantage are effective as they contain Imidacloprid that blocks the nerve transmission killing the fleas right away. Vets recommend Frontline. However, a problem with these remedies is that only full grown fleas are killed and not eggs.

Recent years have seen the development of anti flea products which also destroy the eggs of fleas. A popular inhibitor is Lufenuron which can be bought in the market under the names of Program and Sentinel oral suspensions. Precor and Nylar are flea growth inhibitors which when sprayed on cages, carpets and bedding of the ferret keeps the fleas away. Use a shampoo for the ferret called D-limonene which has a pleasing citrus odor and repels and kills adult fleas.

Fleas can be difficult to control once they infest the ferret. It is still better to prevent the advent of fleas by keeping your pet clean and dry. Take care of basic sanitation of the ferret and its surroundings and automatically your pet will be blessed with a long and healthy life.…

Parvovirus And Your Dog

Parvovirus (commonly called Parvo) is a viral disease that affects dogs. It is far more common in puppies than adult dogs and can have serious ramifications for the infected animal, including death. Parvo grows best in the rapidly dividing cells of the dog?s intestines. As the virus attacks and kills these cells it causes massive diarrhea and halts or slows the creation of white blood cells. In young puppies it can often directly infect the heart, leading to death.

The symptoms of Parvo start with fever, depression, and lethargy. The dog will usually experience a loss of appetite as well and then eventually show more sever signs like vomiting and diarrhea which is often bloody. Once the virus reaches this stage dehydration and death usually follow.

Parvo is carried and transmitted by dogs. The vomit and feces of an infected animal will also carry the virus which is rather resilient and can survive outside the dog?s body in the surrounding environment for as long as nine months. Sometimes an adult dog can be infected by the virus and show no symptoms but act as a carrier transmitting the virus to the other animals it comes into contact with.

There is no cure for Parvo. Dogs that are infected will die of dehydration without treatment. That treatment primarily consists of providing fluids, giving repeated blood transfusions, and preventing dehydration. The mortality rate in dogs affected by Parvo is about 20% if the dog receives treatment in time. Without treatment, about 80% of those infected will die from it. It is a very serious disease.

Parvo tends to affect some dog breeds more than others. Dobermans, Rottweilers, and other black and tan dogs have a greater chance of contracting the virus. The reason for this is unknown but the fact that these dogs are at higher risk does not mean that owners of other types of dogs can rest easily. Dogs of any breed can become infected.

While there is no cure for Parvo, puppies can (and should) be vaccinated against it at an early age. Most vets recommend puppies be immunized starting at six weeks of age with vaccinations continuing until twenty weeks of age. Proper immunization is the best way to prevent a dog from contracting Parvo.…

Useful Facts For Those Wishing To Become A Dog Trainer

There are a number of facts about the origins, ancestry and character of dogs that can be very useful to those who are training dogs. As with all other species, dogs have developed their behavior and character through centuries of adaptation to an ever changing world. However, there are some innate characteristics that will forever be a part of the dog regardless of what adaptations it has taken up.

The first fact to always remember is dogs are animals and at one point they were wild animals. As such they cannot be expected to think or know good and bad. Their lives are governed by instincts and urges. Caring for dogs and also training them are what helps these wonderful creatures ignore some of their instincts and urges. As long as a dog is well fed and cared for, it will behave itself and stay out of trouble. A hungry dog will very easily attack another animal or even a human being because its need for food has not been met. To effectively train a dog requires that it is first well taken care off so as to achieve success.

Another important fact is that dogs are pack animals. Their social structure is based on having a group where each member has a defined position. Each pack has an alpha male as its pack leader and every dog aspires to be the alpha male of the pack. The pack leader provides leadership, protection and a lot more. Your dog sees you as its pack leader and expects you to play that role fully. This is why anytime your dog feels threatened it will always run behind you as it expects you to fend of the attacker.

Dogs are creatures of habit and will learn best through routine and repetition. This is why dog training and dog care need to follow certain processes so as to help the dog learn faster and long term. Feeding times, play times, training times and the times for all other activities must be adhered. Constantly changing activity times will confuse the dog and result in slower and more difficult training for both you and your dog.

Hopefully these facts will help you have a better understanding of your dogs and thus make it easier for you to take them through their training. Successful dog training requires not only understanding the techniques to be applied but also the subject to be trained.…

Geriatric Cats – Symptoms & Diabetes

As cats age and come in to that middle age period from around 7 8 years of age, it is important for owners to keep an eye out for symptoms that could indicate the beginnings of a disease or syndrome. Middle aged to older cats are very prone to developing diabetes, kidney disease, hyperthyroidism, arthritis and sometimes sadly, even cancer.

Symptoms:

Thankfully many geriatric cat diseases can be picked up early on by watching out for several symptoms.

The main one to look out for in these cats is what we call in the Veterinary world PU/PD otherwise meaning excessive urination and excessive drinking. This is a symptom associated with a number of diseases, but particularly diabetes, hyperthyroidism and kidney disease. Keep an eye on your cat is he or she always at the water bowl? If your cat is drinking more than 100ml per kg per day, then he or she is definitely drinking excessive quantities of water and this definitely warrants a full check up.

Weight loss is another major symptom that while being easy to pick. This weight loss however, is generally only realized once the at has lost a large amount of weight. This is another good reason for regular check ups with your Vet as it is very important to monitor weight loss as this can be associated with all of the diseases listed above. Also be aware that cats who are overweight are also prone to diabetes AND arthritis so be sure to try and get your cat to his or her optimal weight before they reach ‘middle age’.

Inappetance is another obvious symptom to look out for and if you notice your cat won’t eat his or her food despite trying several different options, then get this kitty to your Vet sooner rather than later. Whilst this can also be associated with all of the above, inappetance alone can cause a problem called ‘fatty liver’ or ‘hepatic lipidosis’ which can quickly become fatal.

While there are many other symptoms that are associated with the diseases mentioned above, these are the major ones to keep an eye on in your middle aged to geriatric cat. If you notice any of these, it would definitely be worth getting your cat to the Vet for a full check over as well as blood and urine tests.

Diabetes

Feline diabetes is more common than most people realize and is definitely more likely in an overweight cat. The first symptoms noticed are excessive drinking and urination, increased hunger and lethargy. Diabetes is a syndrome where the body doesn’t produce or respond to insulin and as a result glucose remains in the blood rather than being utilized by the cells. As a result most of this glucose also spills over in to the urine causing your cat to urinate more (and hence want to drink more too). Thankfully we can test for glucose in the urine of cats and check the blood for the glucose level. Diabetes is definitely treatable and there is a product now that requires you to give your cat only one injection of insulin per day. This insulin helps drive the glucose into the cells to be used! In some cases insulin injections are no longer needed after several months, but this has only been seen in some animals on a certain type of insulin. Ask your Vet for more details. If you have a question that needs to be answered straight away, check this page: – Ask the Vet.…

Pet Wellness: Twice-annual Veterinary Visits Keep Pets Healthy

Most people have heard the old saying that pets age much faster than we do-seven pet years for each of our human years-but few of us consider what that really means for our pet’s health care.

Consider that most dogs and cats reach adulthood by age 2, and by age 4 they are middle-aged. By the age of 7, most large dog breeds are entering their senior years. And as these “dog and cat years” pass quickly by, serious health issues can arise in a similarly shorter amount of time. Dogs and cats are prone to many of the diseases and disabilities that we are-cancer, diabetes, arthritis and heart disease, to name a few-but they will develop health problems in “pet years,” too.

For this reason, during National Pet Wellness Month, the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) reminds pet owners that they should take their pets into their veterinarian for wellness checkups twice a year. If you take your pet to the veterinarian only once a year, this is equivalent to you seeing your own doctor just once every seven years.

These regular visits will give your veterinarian a chance to detect serious health problems earlier and treat them to extend and improve the quality of your pet’s life. During a twice-annual visit, pet owners should mention to their veterinarian any of the subtle changes they’ve noticed in their pet’s behavior, such as changes in weight, water or food consumption, elimination or anything that seems new. Pets have no way of communicating to their owners that they are having discomfort or other health problems. Cats, in particular, are known for hiding any distress they may be having, so pay close attention. Your observations may help your veterinarian determine if there are any problems, provide an appropriate treatment or prevent problems before they start.

It’s also important to remember that a healthy pet can also ensure that you and your family will remain healthy as well. Some diseases, called zoonotic diseases, can be transmitted to your family by pets, and others are equally threatening to pets and humans. These diseases include rabies and cat scratch disease, which can be transmitted from pets to humans, and Lyme disease, which can be transmitted to pets and humans via parasites. Taking extra precautions to make sure your pets are healthy with regular veterinary visits also helps ensure that you and your family remain healthy as well.…

Kitten Behavior Problems – How To Tame Your Frisky Kitty

Kitten Behavior Problems – How To Tame Your Frisky Kitty

Sometimes, dealing with kitten behavior can be so daunting and confusing. One minute, he wants all of your attention and the next minute, he just wants to be left alone. There may also be times where he’ll even use your leg as a scratching post! If you’re having difficulty figuring out your frisky feline, here’s what you can do about kitten behavior problems.

WHY DOES MY KITTY ACT SO CRAZY?

At times, dealing with a misbehaving cat can test your patience. But the fact of the matter is kitties are hyper. It’s a part of kitten-hood. Like human adolescents, they also go through a teenage stage. This is when they will push boundaries and test their limits. Chewing, scratching, biting and jumping are all behaviors that your little fur ball might display.

WHAT CAN I DO ABOUT IT?

It’s a sad fact that many cats are surrendered to shelters because of behavioral issues. When it comes to kitten behavior problems, you may not be able to figure out what he is doing and just cannot tolerate it any longer. Maybe he keeps using your favorite rug as his toilet or he’s shredding your couch to pieces. You may feel like giving him up for adoption as well. But before you make any hasty decisions, you should take your kitty to the vet to rule out any medical problems that could be causing him to act up.

If he has a clean bill of health, consider talking to a feline behavioral counselor. They are experts who may be able to help with matters such as extreme aggression, eating disorders, destructive clawing and scratching and litter box issues.

Kitten behavior problems can be corrected. All you need is a little time and patience. Once you understand why your feline is being bad and have the tools to correct it, you’ll be well on your way to a happier relationship.…

Buying a Ferret

Buying a Ferret

Today when people decide to get a pet, they often want to go beyond the conventional. Hence they prefer exotic and playful creatures such as ferrets. These small, playful creatures can be as cute as a cat and even as loving as a dog. However, before you actually buy a ferret make sure you have taken care of a few things.

Places to get a Ferret from

– Once you have done your initial preparation regarding a ferret and its requirements, the next time is to find places to buy your ferret from. This is assuming that you have checked the local laws of course; because you need to ensure that keeping a ferret is legal in your specific state. Consult your local vet or research online before you buy a ferret.

– Keep some finances ready because the ferret alone could cost you anything ranging from $75 to $100. Some of the rare breeds such as Angora ferrets are quite expensive. These are genetically rare and besides need to be lactated by other ferret mothers, this only mounts the cost.

– A good place to start searching for ferret sellers and breeders is your local newspapers. You could even visit a vet in your area and get expert advice on the same.

– Like most things, even ferrets can be purchased on the Internet due to rise in the number of pet care websites. Do confirm and check all details, especially the authenticity of rare breeds.

Checklists before you get your Ferret home

Don’t be in a rush to get your ferret home after you’ve completed all the procedures. Before getting it home, you need to stock up on some vital things.

– The most important thing to stock is dry ferret food. These tiny creatures need high protein foods and have an appetite for meat.

– Another essential thing to buy is an exercise pen where your ferret can frolic around. Remember that these small animals love moving around and have bundles of energy to use. Therefore this exercise pen will channelize their energy and provide a safe place for them to play.

– Next you will need other basic items of ferret care such as a bad or hammock, litter box, special shampoo, tiny water bottles and most important a special air spray to minimize the odor coming from your ferret.

These items can be easily purchased from any pet store or website. You can even get bargain deals. Once you have the basics ready you can get your ferret and see how enjoyable and loving these creatures can be.…

Cat Care Secrets For The New Owner

There are two types of “new” cat owners. The first will appreciate that they are in effect bringing into their home a strange animal, whose nature they do not fully understand. This group might do a little research beforehand, and buy or borrow a cat care and training guide. The second group may just assume that the new cat or kitten will very quickly pick up and obey the house rules, and it is this group who are more likely to get angry and frustrated, and maybe resort to smacking or shaking the cat.

For a start, any physical punishment is self-defeating – the cat will simply learn to fear you, and make any further training even more difficult. A very effective alternative to physical punishment is to keep a spray bottle of water handy – if she misbehaves, a little spray will let her know you are not pleased.

The surest key to success with your cat house training is to try to understand how your cat thinks, why she does the things she does, what motivates her. If you expect her to do something that goes against her nature, then you better be prepared to make it worth her while. If you want to make the most rapid progress, a modest investment in a decent cat manual or guide will be richly rewarded, and you will at a stroke begin to understand “cat think” and cat care in general, and also avoid the most common mistakes.

You will find that the most rewarding approach is to encourage good behavior, either by kind words combined with gentle stroking, or some food treat. The cat will quickly learn what she has to do to earn that “reward”, and if the reward is not forthcoming, she will assimilate the knowledge that she has broken some rule.

Cats are known for their short attention span, so your training sessions should be fairly brief, ideally around 10 minutes. You want to eliminate any distractions during these short sessions, so you maximise the chances of gaining the undivided attention of the cat. The perfect location is a small indoors room, with no view outside, and no disturbances.

The essential training exercises that concern most new cat owners are to do with urination, scratching, jumping and biting.

No cat will easily take to using a litter box – it is contrary to their nature – so it is essential that you are very determined and consistent in rewarding the cat when he performs properly.

The second biggest concern is with cat scratching, a behavior that is an essential part of the animal’s nature. The provision of good scratching posts in strategic places will alleviate the problem, and spare your furniture and curtains. The surgical removal of the cat’s claws was until recently seen as an easy and permanent solution to the problem, but in a more humane age this is seen as quite a barbaric act to perform on a Cat, and one that upsets the whole balance mechanism of the cat, and is really traumatic.

A cat will not expend unnecessary energy, so if she jumps there is a reason for it. Most often, she will jump onto the window sill to view the outside world – if you want her not to jump on a particular sill, block off the view for the first 15 inches, perhaps with a piece of fabric. If there is no view, she will soon go elsewhere. Jumping onto counters or worktops or tables in the kitchen should be completely discouraged from the beginning – it might simply signal that she wants feeding.

Biting is unfortunately often encouraged in a kitchen – children in particular enjoy being bitten by young kitten teeth, and will often playfully provoke it until it bites. But that “trains” the cat that biting is acceptable, so it should be avoided. If the behavior persists, you might discourage it with a spray from your water bottle.…

Checklist For Bringing Home Your Ragdoll Kitten

Checklist For Bringing Home Your Ragdoll Kitten

Whether you are going to the next town to get your new Ragdoll kitten or if you are having your kitten flown to you, here are some items you might want to make sure you have before you bring home your Ragdoll kitten.

o Pet Carrier – If your kitty is being shipped, then your kitten will come with one. If not, then you will want to get one to bring your kitten home in as well as use when going to the vet. Be sure carriers are large enough for when kittens get older- Medium size should be fine. If you are looking at carriers for their size, then you want to get one that is for about 20 lbs. And this is something you will have the entire life of your pet, so don’t worry too much about spending a lot because you’ll have it for a long time!

o Towel – Have a towel absorbent cloth for your kitty to rest on, and in case of a potty accident, if he is in the carrier for a long time.

o Food – Get whatever your breeder recommends or is feeding them now. If you do not like their choice in food, you will still need to have the food s/he is used to and then you can switch to what you want later. There are guidelines on how to transition cats to different foods and it’s very important to follow them.

o Water and Food Bowls – I recommend stainless steel or ceramic ones for easy cleaning. Plastic ones have been known to cause acne in cats, so best to avoid them altogether.

o Litter Box – Might as well get a big one since your kitty will need it when s/he grows up.

o Litter – You will want to have the litter that your breeder has been using, so that your kitten recognizes it immediately and wants to use the litter box. Of course, you can also transition to another litter later on – but starting out, you want the same kind your breeder is using.

o Cat Toys – Think about getting cat wand toys, catnip cat toys and even interactive cat toys – here are some to consider:

– Neko Flies

– Yeowww! Catnip Banana

– Bergan Turbo Scratcher

o Scratching Post – Again, see what the breeder has in their home and then see if you can find something similar. This allows your kitty to scratch vertically.

o Scratcher – A horizontal scratcher, like a cardboard one, allows your kitty to also scratch down, rather than up (vertically) – there are many toys out there that are multi-purpose in that they are a scratcher as well as a toy like the Bergan Turbo Scratcher

o Brush and Comb – Many Ragdoll cats don’t require a considerable amount of grooming, but it is important from a young age to get your kitty used to being brushed so that when they are 19 years old, then don’t hate the feel of it. Brushing your cat creates an excellent opportunity for pet owner and cat bonding time as well.

o Nail Clippers – Your breeder might have a recommendation as far as which kind of nail clippers to get. It is important to get them used to nail clippers and the feel of having their nails cut from a young age.…

Kitten Biting Problems

Kitten Biting Problems

Kittens are cute, adorable, fun little creatures. They are cuddly and want to play with your hands, biting or scratching them. At first, they may seem like harmless play. Watch out, when they grow older and the teeth and claws get sharper, playtime wouldn’t be that enjoyable anymore. They can even draw blood from your hands if you don’t stop this rough play as soon as it starts.

Kitten biting problems are often caused by the cat owner himself. I’m not saying that it’s your fault. The biting and scratching behavior in kittens are completely natural to them. It is a vital part of their development because of their predatory nature. However, if your hands become their target, this behavior should be stopped even before their teeth and claws get sharper.

In their natural world, together with their mother and siblings, kittens play a lot together. It includes mainly of stalking, biting, scratching, pouncing, wrestling and chasing- predatory skills that a normal kitten of the wild would have to learn to survive. Play can sometimes get rough and even become aggressive between siblings. When this happens, the other kitten usually growls, retaliate or just stop playing. The mother also corrects the kitten with a growl or a swat. Kittens can send each other signals to indicate that aggression in their games is not tolerated and subconsciously teaches the kitten to control his aggression.

Biting and any other aggressive behavior in kittens can be stopped. If playtime with your kitten means playing with your hands, try diverting his attention by using toys instead. You can use a string, balls made of paper, or any household items as toys for your kitten. If he still tries to reach for your hands, stop playing altogether and walk away. Your kitten craves your attention and if you ignore him, it is equivalent to scolding him. If during play, he becomes aggressive and bites your hand, say NO in a stern voice and gently remove your hand. Be consistent and he will soon learn to become a gentle and well-behaved kitten.…

Feline Fine: Cat Care For Cat Lovers

Dogs, as it is often said, are a man’s best friend. But whilst they may indeed be a very loving and loyal companion to have around, the large proportion of cat owners in the UK would probably argue that their moggy is every bit as faithful a friend, and also a fully integrated member of the family unit.

Indeed, most people are fairly clear on whether they are a ‘cat person’ or a ‘dog person’ and normally have quite specific reasons for their opinions. But regardless of what camp a person sits in, most people would probably agree that cats require a lot less maintenance than their canine counterparts.

For instance, cats quite often tend to take care of their own hygiene, which can be of great help for those pet owners who perhaps have their time occupied with more important day to day tasks. But, and as many cat owners will have experienced, they also have a tendency to wander off, particularly if they are living in the countryside. It’s fair to say, however, that cats are reasonably independent creatures that are more than capable of taking care of themselves.

The down side to this independence is that when cats do stray away from home it can often be for long periods of time, but regardless of how many lives cats are supposed to have, this can still cause a great deal of worry for any feline-loving family.

Of course, when a cat does disappear for days on end, it is merely doing what comes naturally. It may be hunting, looking for a mate, or it may simply have wandered into a neighbouring garden where it has become acquainted with another, perhaps overly-generous, cat lover. Either way, it can be difficult to determine a cat’s reasoning for straying and more than often you begin to consider the worst has happened.

As a result, it’s not too uncommon to see posters placed around a neighbourhood, offering a description of the missing moggy in question, and perhaps even a small reward for its safe return. However, the cat may even wander home eventually of its own accord, and at times possibly a little bedraggled and worse for wear.

Moreover, even the littlest of scrapes or cuts can become infected after days of roughing it, which can lead to a great deal of expense if a vet’s help is needed. But as is the case with anything in life that we hold dear to us, it is possible to provide a little protection should the need arise, and many people choose to take out pet insurance for such occasions.

Having pet insurance in place will ensure that a mischievous moggy isn’t cause for a financial catastrophe, as protection is usually offered not only against the cost of veterinary care, but also for reward and recovery costs too. And as a fully integrated member of the family unit, that’s probably the very least a cat deserves!…

Ferret’s Odor

Ferret’s Odor

Ferrets are cute and supple looking creatures that make easy pets, and moreover they are loved by their owners from the hilt. But, do you really know that ferrets have unique smell associated with them. This strong skin odor makes them stand different from the crowd. The odor is the result of oil secreted from their skin, and protects him/her from dryness. And if you are bathing your ferret quite often, then it is quite natural that you’d be draining the oil away from your it’s skin. Irrespective of the fact that you clean the ferret cage for number of times, this unique and sharp odor remains in the cage and your ferret’s skin.

There’s absolutely no doubt that they are good and adorable pets to give you the company and enjoyment, the occurrence of very unique smell in the ferret’s skin keep the pet owners away from them. Therefore, the real tussle is to educate and learn yourself on how to stay with such unique smell, and also on how to live with the ferrets scent. Here is the list of to-do things that you should consider on priority while warding off the ferret’s scent:

• You should associate with the unique ferret’s scent that he/she possesses. Remember, it is the natural odor that is unique to every ferret, and you have to learn to live with this odor.

• Give potty training to your ferret, as in this manner you can lessen the intensity of smell coming from your ferret’s skin. Potty training can be started by making use of litter boxes and trays. If you fail in potty training your ferret, the result would be -Filthy Ferret Cage with Obnoxious Odor. Are you ready to take on this?

• Create a comfortable and hygienic environment in and around the ferret’s cage. Wash the objects/utensils inside the ferret cage as frequently as you can. Further, all he basic essentials like food, fresh water etc. should also be provided inside the ferret’s cage.

• You should also regularly and habitually clean ferrets bed, accessories and cage. Doing so will reduce the body odor of your ferret. You can also use lukewarm water and skin-friendly detergents for the job.

Here are some of the educative steps that you as an ardent ferret owner should religiously follow:

• Be explorative and grab as much information about the ferret s possible. Keep reading about different aspects of ferret’s health. The more you explore the more knowledgeable you become about your ferret’s health.

• Clean and wash your ferrets’ skin with ferret shampoo. Give your ferret frequent washes, but too much of bathing results in over secretion of the oil. And this further makes the skin odor pungent.

Ferret’s natural skin odor is the means to protect him/her from the external pathogens. But, the odor becomes unbearable for the pet owners inside the home. Therefore, following the above described guidelines will not only ensure good and refreshing atmosphere in your home, but also give your ferret a healthy atmosphere to breathe.…

Is Owning A Pet Rat Right For You?

When you tell someone your contemplating obtaining a rat for your family generally folks’s first reaction is this weird look on their face and they say “Yuck! Why?” “Their tales are scary looking!” They are frequently linked with scary and filthy things.

Here you can read and choose for your self if possessing a rat is ideal for you and your family members.

Unfortunately folks are poorly educated when it comes to these extremely clever critters . They only know what history has claimed them as being, a disease infested, nasty, annoying rodent that eats all your food and bites people for fun. When in reality, the domesticated rat (a.k.a. Rattus Norvegicus) are physiologically and psychologically different from their untamed relatives. The rat has no more health risks to people than any other pet..

Their tails might not be the cutest thing to look at but they help the rat to balance themselves. Speaking from experience, you don’t actually notice them or pay attention to them mainly because you’re to busy looking at those cute faces and big dumbo ears!

Dumbo/fancy rats are basically the same thing. The dumbo rat just has bigger ears than the fancy rat.. You will want to buy your rats in pairs so they can keep each company when you cant. You should buy rats in same sex pairs or you will have a bunch of rattie babies!!!!

Typically a rats lifespan is approximately 2 years but of course that can change if treated properly and they are maintained well. Size: 7-10″ body, plus 6-8″ tail.

Rats are very are the smartest of all small pets!!! If taken the time, rats can learn their name and come to it! Unfortunately, rats do have an odor to them. Ideally, their litter and caged should be cleaned every couple of days to help keep odors away, once a week at the latest. This does not just pertain to rats it’s with any caged animal.. So if your not to keen on small animal odors then rats may not be for you, or any other caged animal..

Once all the essentials are purchased, maintanence is fairly inexpensive. You will need a rat habitat to house your furry critter, bedding, food bowls and sipper style water bottle, fortified fancy rat diet, chew toys, exercise ball and wheel. Rat guides and training books are very beneficial. Please look under the buy rat supplies tab to see everything you need to maintain your new rat.

In my opinion, rats are the perfect pet! No having to take your rats on midnight walks because nature calls.. Rats are fairly cheap and inexpensive to keep. They will fit and adapt to any size home. They’re big on personality and real people pleasers! They are great candidates for training because they have great memory and problem solving skills.…

Presidential Pets

Presidential Pets

At the Presidential Pet Museum, you can learn about what current and former Presidents had for pets. In reviewing the list, most of them are/were pet lovers and some had several pets. The list is to long to mention every one but here are some of the more recent.

Barack Obama has a Portuguese water dog named Bo given to his children by Senator Ted Kennedy.

George W. Bush had several pets. A Scottish Terrier named Miss Beazley, an English Springer Spaniel named Spot, another Scottish Terrier named Barney, a cat named India and a Texas Longhorn named Ofelia.

Bill Clinton had a cat named Socks and a Labrador Retriever named Buddy.

George Bush had Millie and Ranger, two Springer spaniels.

Ronald Reagan had two dogs, Lucky and Rex (King Charles Cavalier Spaniel) and several cats.

Jimmy Carter had a dog named Grits and a Siamese cat named Misty Malarky Ying Yang.

Gerald Ford had a Golden Retriever named Liberty and a Siamese cat named Shan.

Richard Nixon had three dogs named Checkers, Vicky and King Timahoe.

Lyndon Johnson had two beagles, Him and Her, a white collie, Blanco and Yuki, a mongrel. He also had hamsters and lovebirds.

John Kennedy had may pets. Charlie, Caroline’s Welsh Terrier, a cat named Tom Kitten, a canary named Robin, two parakeets, Bluebell and Marybelle, three ponies, Caroline’s Macaroni, Tex and Leprechaun, two hamsters, Debbie and Billie, a rabbit named Zsa Zsa, Mrs. Kennedy’s horse, Sardar and several dogs including Pushinka, Shannon and Clipper.

As you look back in time before the use of the automobile, many of the pets were horses. Many of our country’s first Presidents were excellent horseman who enjoyed riding and hunting. Their horses were very cherished and were paid great tributes when they died.

The Presidential Pet Museum was founded in 1999 and is part of the President’s Park located in Williamsburg, Virginia. The museum is a collection of pictures, stories and artifacts of these pets. You will be surprised on how many and what type of animals they had for pets. Some of the pets were given to them by foreign countries.

A President is no different than anybody else for having a pet. Many grew up with animals living on farms and ranches. A pet provides love and companionship that helps relieve stress. He could enjoy quality time with the pet without having to worry about the day to day care. They are/were very supportive to organizations related to animal care and well being.

It is very interesting learning about the different pets. Visiting the museum in Williamsburg can be very entertaining and educational.…

Uniqueness of a Cat’s Eyes

Uniqueness of a Cat’s Eyes

It has been said that eyes are the window to the soul. When gazing into the eyes of a cat, you get the feeling that the statement is very real. But there is more to a cat’s eyes. A cat’s eyes have some unique features that are different than humans. The best known is a cat’s ability to see at night.

The eyes face forward on a cat improving their depth perception but limit their field of view. The cat has a vision of 20/100 enabling it to see far away but not up close. A cat’s central vision is not as sharp as a humans because of the eye’s construction. A cat cannot see directly below its’ nose. A cat can see colors and distinguish between the colors especially the blues and violets. A cat’s ability to see colors is limited as compared to humans.

The color of a cat’s eyes varies but orange, green and golden are the most common. Blue eyes are associated with Siamese cats. There is a misconception that all white cats with blue eyes are deaf. A white cat with one blue eye and one of another color has a higher risk of deafness on the blue eye side.

The pupils of the eyes should be the same size. The pupils of a cat’s eyes are vertical and much larger than a human. If the size of the pupils differ, this can be an indication of possible harmful conditions: inflammation of the eye (conjunctivitis), Horner’s syndrome, FeLV, tumors and central nervous system injury. A cat can have other conditions including cataracts and glaucoma. If not treated, high veterinarian expenses and even blindness can occur.

A cat has an inner, third eyelid called a nictating membrane to protect the cat from dryness and/or damage. A cat does not have to blink it’s eyes like humans to lubricate them. If the third eyelid is partially closed and a cat is not sleeping, this may indicate a cat is sick.

A cat has much better night vision than a human. Although the cat cannot see in total darkness, the cat only needs one-sixth of the illumination required by a human. The muscles of the iris narrow the eye to a slit in bright light and fully open in dim light. A reflective layer behind the cat’s retina called the tapeturn reflects the incoming light and bounces it back amplifying the light. In daylight, this amplification is too strong. A cat’s eyes will narrow to a slit-like condition to minimize the light to improve it’s ability to see in the daytime.

A cat will express it’s mood with it’s eyes. An angry cat will have narrowed pupils. An excited or frightened cat’s eyes will be wide open. A happy cat’s eyes may appear a shade darker. A cat will kiss with it’s eyes by gazing at you and then blinking it’s eyes.

The uniqueness of a cat’s eye has long been recognized by many people. Many rare gems have been referred to as a cat’s eye. Even in the game of marbles, it was something special to have a marble that resembled a cat’s eye.…

Important Factors to Know About the Ferret Hammock

Important Factors to Know About the Ferret Hammock

Sleep is one thing that ferrets seem to be experts at although they do require that their sleep conditions are more than sufficient. While ferrets love to burrow and nestle in tightly to enjoy a long nap they also like to have other alternatives if at all possible. If they have a chill or feel like it they would like the option of sinking deep into some plush bedding but they also want to spread out in a nice ferret hammock too.

A good ferret hammock can not just be any hammock so buying one does require a bit of thought. Think about the purpose of a hammock for a minute, it will hang from the cage and is a good place for the ferret to sprawl out in. Make sure that the material that the hammock is made of is nice and furry and offers options of interior pockets that your ferret can snuggle inside if he so chooses. Ferrets simply adore these hammocks.

Another thing that ferrets adore about these hammocks is that they sway back and forth which offers a calming and soothing effect to the ferret when he is going into a deep slumber. Likely the most important thing about these hammocks is that it moves the ferret sleep area away from the area where they eat and eliminate. This is very important to ferrets to not have these areas close together.

If you have multiple ferrets then you will likely want to buy multiple hammocks to accommodate these ferrets. Even if you buy multiple hammocks you might soon discover that your ferrets have nestled together in one area however, some ferrets do not like the idea of sharing so choices are appealing to them.

Don’t make the mistake of buying a cheap hammock. You will end up replacing it sooner so make sure that the hammock that you choose can be washed regularly and make sure that the material of the hammock isn’t chewable or isn’t likely to get their nails embedded in it. These are the things that you want to base your purchase decision on as opposed to factors related to color and style. Keep in mind that ferrets are pretty much color blind so they are not concerned with these things.

Prior to buying a hammock you should be sure to look it over carefully. Check and see if it comes with the necessary hardware that is required to install it or if you have to purchase that separately. There are two concerns with the hardware, one is to make sure that the hardware is simple and allows you to take it down for cleaning and to put it back up with ease and second, you want to make sure that the hardware is stable so that your ferret can not harm himself on it.

Look over the hammock frequently to ensure the safety of it. This is a good practice to get into and assures that you are taking every precaution to ensure your ferret’s safety.…

Animals: More Human Than Humans

What can we say about pets? They are warm, loving, always there wanting our affection; simply put to love and be loved. For many animals small animals especially, it is a simple life they are able to lead in homes where they are welcomed and treated as one of the family. In a perfect world this would be the scenario that all pets would have going for each and every one of them. Unfortunately this is not a perfect world and the reality is there are many pets that are beaten, abused, and treated downright inhumanely by owners who choose to take their issues out on an innocent animal who can not fight back. For these unfortunate lost pets they are truly more human than the humans whose care they live under.
We see this kind of behaviour wherever we turn it’s sad to say; walking down the street the echoing sounds of a person screaming at their pet that quickly turns to violence and the painful cries of the innocent animal haunt our thoughts as we are forced to let it be. There are the advertisements from the SPCA or organizations similar in nature that show beaten, bruised, and scarred lost pets who have been rescued from the cruel habitat they were raised in; their eyes being in such broken pain that are begging for a home that will be humane for them, a home where they can be loved. It breaks our hearts seeing this kind of pain in these innocent animals knowing that the cause is because of a human, a human who by all regards is fully capable of exerting dominance over his/her pet with no regard for the deep pain he/she is actually causing. What’s worse is many of these cruel owners disregard that they are even doing anything wrong when in actuality beating down a pet morally and what should be legally, is as wrong as domestic violence towards a spouse or a child.
Now many people will argue that animals may not be as innocent as they appear to be arguing for example, a dog’s bite can be as dangerous as a human’s fist. While there is truth that a dog bite can be painful and possibly infectious, most dogs if treated right, will only lash out and bite in a defensive mechanism such as if they can’t see or sense someone sneaking up on their backside. Studies have shown that animals who are treated respectfully and with the care that would be shown to a child in return are very calm, very welcoming in return and as such are not violent by nature. To say then that a dog’s ability to bite out at a person justifies violently attacking the dog in return is ludicrous; by nature pets are to be loving and gentle provided they are not treated intolerably. It may be a cliche but the old rule ‘treat others how you would like to be treated’ is more valid than in just social scenarios with fellow people.
Animals have rights that are as valid as humans and to those that choose to disregard them, there should be punishable laws set against them. Children that are rescued from abusive families can lead to punishable imprisonment for their abuser(s); thus for pets, there should be no difference. Abuse is abuse whether to an innocent child or an innocent pet; domestic abuse is a punishable crime and should be enforced by those championing animal rights. Adjustments to the laws need to be made to help save more animals from being caught between a rock and a hard place in being homeless strays or victims of abuse. We as humans have humanity inside us for a reason and must use that inherent goodness to stand up for those who can not stand up for themselves.
Now sometimes people can go too far in their protests; a recent example is the PETA member from the States who came to Canada and slammed a pie in the face of one of our Members of Parliament. Granted for those of us who hate all politicians for THEIR inherent greed, sense of entitlement, and corrupt nature the sight of one of them being slammed with a pie so hard it could nearly break her nose is hilarious; but that very act of violence simple as it may be, hypocritically goes against what the member of PETA was trying to stand up against. Being a champion of animal rights and fighting against cruelty to animals does not give you the right to leave your country, come to another country, and assault a member of that country’s government to make your point. Peaceful protests, rallies; these can make the point and can gather the attention needed to spread the message. …

Protecting Your Furniture And Carpets With Cats

Those of us who are cat lovers know that our love of felines comes with a little frustration at times. One such time occurs when our kitties employ their claws to acts of destruction on your carpet or furniture.

We have all tried to train our cats to stop scratching the backs of our couches; many of us have experienced this is not a simple matter to correct. While some people resort to yelling or shooting water at their cat’s nose, there is a much more effective way to correct this issue.

If you’ve taken basic psychology, you’ll remember there are two types of reinforcement, positive and negative. Employ both reinforcement tactics to training your cat and you’ll be through the woods before you know it.

Negative Reinforcement The idea behind negative reinforcement is to take something away to impact behavior. When it comes to your cat scratching in areas you don’t want destroyed, you want to provide motivation for your cat to stop scratching.

One of the most effective ways of providing this motivation is through a product called Sticky Paws (available or your favorite pet supply retailer). To use this product, place the tape on the areas your cat has been scratching.

Positive Reinforcement Once you use the Sticky Paws, the next step is to provide the place where you want your cat to scratch. This can be as easy providing a scratch post, either large or small. These posts come in two varieties, cardboard and carpet, and either will do the trick.

Beyond just supplying the scratch post, you need to attract your cat to the post. A very easy way to develop this attraction is to spray the post with some Catnip Spray (Whiskercity makes one cats love). This can make for a playful transition from an undesired scratch area to a more appropriate one.

Old habits die hard More so for us, the human, than for our cats sometimes. If you’ve been caught yelling at your kitty, this can be a difficult habit to break. You may have become accustomed to hollering every time you hear your cat scratching. When you put both the Sticky Paws as well as new scratch post in place, you’ll want to become very intentional about checking where you kitty is scratching before open your internal megaphone.

Keep in mind all three of these areas. If you provide either the negative or positive reinforcement, you will be ineffective. To be successful you really need both. Likewise, if you continue to holler at your cat when they start scratching at your preferred scratch post, you’ll prevent them from forming the habit of scratching at the right spot.…

How Maine Coon Kitten Pictures Get Your Attention

How Maine Coon Kitten Pictures Get Your Attention

In the cat world category, who wouldn’t be captured by looking at the beauty of Maine coon kitten pictures? Well I’d say, no one!

People got to hear, be curious, and then adore the newfound breed of cats for quite sometime now. Charles Darwin once said that– any animal can hardly be said to have a distinct origin. In the inception of the Maine Coon cat kittens, there are numerous legends, myths, and assumptions that existed on over 250-year time history.

Truth is Maine Coon kittens’ ancestral genes are a native long haired cat of North America. They are well known for their luxuriously shaggy fur coat. Originally a working cat, the Maine Coon is solid and rugged that can endure a harsh climate.

These felines come in a myriad of colors and patterns. Although the color of the coat takes several months to settle into the finished product. The Black Smoke Maine Coon kitten is one variety that shows off white undercoat, which is deeply tipped with black. The cat in repose appears black, but in motion its white undercoat is clearly apparent.

Males are goofy, females are sensible— so the saying goes. These gentle giants are backed up by intelligence, a well balanced character and a friendly disposition. Their voices, setting them apart from other cats, have a distinctive, chirping trill which they use from courting to cajoling people into playing.

Popularity grew with their amiable disposition and huggable appearance. They were gathered and shown and recorded in the cat’s literature at around 1861 with a mention of a black and white cat named Captain Jenkins of the Horse Marines. Surprisingly enough, this cats’ popularity gain and gain more recognition and even won various awards in cat shows. The fame grows progressively, but not until the more exotic-seeming cats came. This causes their decline but popularity soon began to climbed by 1950s and until today.

Kittenish throughout their lives, the Maine Coon males tend to be the clowns while the females retain more dignity. Loyalty and gentleness made them a well-loved pet among families. They are very sociable and get along with children and other household pets.…

Learn About Crate Training Puppies

Crate training puppies has received a bad reputation in many articles and symposiums on dog care, but there are logical reasons for using a crate to train your pup. No one wants to see dogs that have to live in crates, but they are valuable for house-breaking your dog, and also for being a “chill out” place where your dog can relax without human interruption. Especially if you have young children who want to play all the time, your pup may actually appreciate a little “crate time” to rest, and get away from the little hands for awhile.
You will be helping your dog if you teach him what a crate is for. It’s valuable for traveling, for rest after an illness or injury, and for trips to the vet. When I lived in a house with rescue dogs, we had a crate for each dog even though they ran loose when we were home. At bedtime, most of the dogs headed for their own crates, and sacked out, with the doors open. A crate doesn’t have to be a cell or a dungeon; it can be a nice sleeping place.
Crate training puppies is also a valuable training tool if your pups are in that stage of life when they think everything is a chew toy. You can save a lot of wear and tear on your furniture, clothing, etc. if your dog has a crate full of chew toys. Always supervise your puppy if he has a rawhide bone or the like, in case he would have a choking problem.
Using a crate is a good way to help housebreak your pup, as well. The crate should be the right size for your dog – not too big and not too small. The dog will not usually soil an area where he will be sleeping, and a giant crate gives him the option of urinating and sleeping in the same place. He should rest comfortably in his crate, and it should be small enough that he won’t want to urinate or defecate there, because it is his sleeping area.
If your pup exhibits signs of separation anxiety, the crate can be a place of refuge for him when you have to leave him, to go to work, as most of us must do. You don’t even have to close the crate door if you don’t want to – he will be able to rest quietly in his crate, so that he won’t get all spastic and upset when you leave him. Some dogs just can’t handle the separation, and they truly pine for you while you’re away. They need to be able to relax and chill out while you are gone, and a crate is a place where this can happen. This is a very humane reason for crate training puppies.
Many trainers recommend that crate training puppies be done in your bedroom, where you sleep. Personally, I like my dog to sleep on the bed with me, but if you want a dog-free bed, the crate is a good alternative. And if you train him to crate up first, when he’s a pup, you can always invite him into your bed later on, when he’s not so bouncy and boisterous, so you can get some sleep.
Don’t give your pup attention when he cries in his crate. I know it sounds cruel, but he needs to learn that it’s OK for him to be alone in his crate and accept that alone time. Don’t reward his crying with attention, because it will defeat the purpose of training him to stay in the crate. If you use your bedroom for training, he will eventually relax and sleep when you do, so that is an excellent first step in getting your pup used to a crate.…

Making Pig Pens

Most people think that pigs are one of the dirtiest animals because in movies they are constantly covered in mud and living in it. This is in fact a mistake that is made quite often and anyone who has these animals will tell you that building their home or pen around only mud will make them mad. They want areas where they can eat and play.
The first thing that you need to do is choose an area where the pen should be. You will have to find something that if flat and will be able to drain easily when it rains. Water that is left standing on the ground will attract insects that will bite the pig. Some people will choose to set it up on a concrete slab.
After you have chosen the location you need to build a house that will keep the pig safe when it rains or is cold. They do not have the toughest skin or much hair and is sensitive to weather conditions. make sure that that the fences are at least four feet high so they cannot jump the fence.
Make sure that you separate areas for the pig to sleep, eat, and play. They are rather organized and clean animals so you need to keep their feeding troughs in a different area from where they sleep or use the bathroom. Inside of the pig pen there should be a good bit of straw to help keep them warm during the cold months and to absorb odors when they use the bathroom.
You can have a mud pile when you build pig pens. They only use this when they are trying to cool off during the summer. If you want to forgo it then you should install a fan or some other form of shade.…

Fatal Ferret Hair Loss

Fatal Ferret Hair Loss

It is 300 years since ferrets arrived in America as tamed pets. Just like any living species they show symptoms of various diseases and hence the ferret owners have to be aware of the symptoms to provide timely medical attention in case of conditions like the ferret hair loss.

Ferrets have a tendency to molt which results in detachment of hair during night. Normally the feathery hairs of the ferrets fall off in spring and grow again during winter. But due to molting, sometimes there is complete loss of hair in a very short span of time and equally quickly the hairs grow. You need not worry about this condition, as it is normal for ferrets to experience this.

There are high incidences of the tumor of the adrenal glands in ferrets found in America. The tumor is prevalent particularly when they are between 3 to 4 years old, but on few occasions it occurs even when they are beyond 4 years old. At this point they experience loss of hair, which is known as endocrine alopecia. Unlike during molting, during this condition hair begins to fall from the tail and the limbs to finally leave the ferret bereft of hair except for few patches at the end of the tail and the head. The ferret has to be rushed to a vet, when this happens.

As pet owners love their pets they are fully conversant of the symptoms occurring before the disease and never miss to notice the symptom. The ferret hair loss is a symptom of glandular enlargement, which results in tumor for the ferret.

Signs of hair loss in ferret have to be carefully noted without being confused with the normal loss of hair. If early detection of symptoms is missed it would become difficult to save the ferret as the tiny animal quickly lapses to distress and succumbs. Hence it is not a bad idea to take the ferret for routine periodic check-ups to the vet to prevent calamities.…

Why Kittens Are Better Than Puppies

Why Kittens Are Better Than Puppies

So, you are deciding on either a puppy or a kitten. Let’s look over the various characteristics, like physical attributes, personality, care requirements, and time. The physical attributes of puppies and kittens are sight, hearing, smell, coat, eye color, temperature control, and personality.

Puppies are color blind in that they can’t see red and green. They do have hearing in the 16 to 20 hertz range. This is much better than humans. Puppies can be born with certain coat color markings and eye color, but they can change as the puppy becomes an adult. Generally they are born with blue eyes that change to brown. Puppies shortly develop temperature control. When they are hot they can perspire through their paws, and they pant to cool themselves off. Generally there are two types of personalities. Similarly to humans there is the busy, active, and self-centered type. The other type as you can imagine is the laid back forgiving type. Puppies require a set schedule for relieving themselves. They are fed in the morning and in the evening. They require that their owner or a care giver be around to take care of their needs. They are a pet that requires time.

In comparison kittens are born blind and they can’t see clearly and don’t have clear and functioning eye sight until the thirty-fifth day. They can’t see color. Kittens cannot regulate their body heat until they are 7 weeks old. Their hearing is fully developed at 4 weeks. Their sense of smell is refined by 3 weeks, but they only have 67 million smell-sensitive cells as compared to the 220 million of a puppy. In this regard the puppy wins out. Eye coloring can change as the kitten matures, but this is in the first few weeks. The kitten’s coloring remains the same as it matures. Kitten’s personality should be full of energy; this is an indication that the kitten is healthy. They need physical activity and space to properly develop. They require physical touch for warmth and to develop a hierarchy within the family. The more you interact with the kitten the more you will have an active member of your family. After the kitten has developed to functioning on its own you may leave it for many hours with just a litter box, food, and water.

In conclusion after comparing the physical attributes, personality, care requirements, and time in this busy lifestyle the clear choice is to get a kitten. I now that kittens and puppies are both cute and adorable because they are young and small, but the time factor alone decided that kittens are better than puppies.…

Basic Parrot Training

Important to remember

Always keep the parrot training in a positive manner. There are a few things you should remember before you start training your parrot which are key elements to make the training sessions bear fruits:

– When the parrot does something ??? give a reward

– When your parrot does something undesirable ??? ignore it

– NEVER punish you parrot

This might seem a little bit simple, but the goal of the parrot training is to shape your parrot the way you want. By giving rewards when doing things you want and ignoring it when doing things you don???t want, the parrot will soon learn what to do to get your attention. A negative reaction from you can actually turn into a reward for your bird if it???s looking for attention. Just to compare (same principles for training dogs) think about a barking dog. If the dog really wants attention and therefore is barking, the worst thing the owner can do is actually giving the dog the attention it seeks. The owner gives the dog the reward ??? attention ??? and therefore encourages the dog to do the same next time it wants attention from the owner.

What to teach you parrot first?

Two of the most important commands you can ever teach your parrot is the step up and step down commands. These simple commands will ease your future parrot training as well as the everyday handling of your bird. These are relatively easy and extremely important skills to teach. Stepping up is quite a natural movement for a bird so it is generally easy to train this on command (stepping down is a bit trickier to teach). Getting your bird to step up and step down on command makes handling much easier and helps you to set some boundaries for your bird (for example, you can more easily remove your bird from areas of you home that are not bird-proofed, return a bird back to his or her playgym or cage, etc.). If you have a baby bird, he or she is probably pretty cooperative but starting early with the step up and step down commands is still a good idea. Not only does training a cooperative baby allow you to give lots of positive reinforcement, it sets a good foundation for training more skills to your bird in the future.

As mentioned above use positive reinforcement. When your parrot does something good or obeys, give it a treat or reward. If your parrot behaves badly ignore that bad behavior. Your parrot would like to have your attention so ignoring that behavior is ???punishment enough???. Never punish your parrot. Any attention even negative is still attention and punishing your parrot will make it get used to negative attention and may lead to your parrot seeking your attention by doing ???bad??? things. A positive strategy also means using praise. Once your parrot has learned something try using praise to reward your parrot. If you use a treat every single time as a reward your parrot might get ???spoiled??? and not want to obey or perform unless a treat is given.

Wish you all the success with your beloved bird

Is a Siamese Kitten Right For You?

Is a Siamese Kitten Right For You?

“We are Siamese if you please, we are Siamese if you don’t please…” Familiar with Walt Disney’s Lady and the Tramp in 1959? Two havoc-wreaking Siamese cats were featured as “Si and Am” along with the popularity of the Siamese breeds in the late 19th century.

Cats have been associated with human for at least 9,500 years, and are currently the most popular pet in the world. It has been featured on movies decades ago in both real and fictional films. One true-to-life pet named Jason, the first feline to join on BBC TV’s best kids programme Blue Peter, was a Seal-Point Siamese.

In 1884, according to most sources, a departing British Acting Vice-Consul at Bangkok named Edward Gould acquired 2 breeding Wichien-maas, or what we call the Siamese cat today and brought them with him to England. There had been skepticism though as to where Sir Edward got the Siamese pair since these are cats bred by the royal family in Siam. When Pho and Mia- the imported cats- produced 3 lovely Siamese kittens were flaunted at the Crystal Palace Show in 1885, they captured the onlookers’ attention describing them as “an unnatural nightmare of a cat”.

From that time on, these oriental cats favored acquisition from the British aristocracy with their unique seal points, rarity and royal background. The traditional Siamese cats have sturdier bodies and vernacularly known as appleheads, an unfavorable nickname coined by modern type breeders due to its less wedge-shaped heads.

The modern Siamese kitten acquired its trait from a more streamlined and elegant parent genes. Everything about the modern Siamese cat is long- long slender body, triangular-shaped head with thin snout, long neck, long whip-like tail, and long slim legs. The cat’s eyes are almond-shaped, oblique and mostly blue that turns reddish at night. An exception to the cat’s long characteristics, a short glossy fur exquisitely intensifies the graceful body lines.

The Siamese kitten is typically active and playful that bears on the adult stage. Siamese cats are one of the most gregarious cats in the world. Intelligent-wise, Siamese cats topped it all among the feline category. Its ingenuity makes them easily understood in terms of their nature. Now generally speaking, blue-eyed cats with white fur have a high incidence of genetic deafness. And that makes Siamese not so good in their hearing ability in contrast to their feline agility.

How elegantly looking though, Siamese cats are very chatty. From simple meows to loud raspy calls, most are constant non-stop talkers. However, they are also curious, affectionate and athletic even on their grown up years.

Most gestures and vocal expressions tend to convey of some sort. Siamese cats interact on different levels to both humans and fellow felines. They are affectionate and warm that explains a close relationship to the kitten cat breeder. Their expressive manner makes them closely bonded to humans. They even prefer and enjoy the comforts of your homes. With much time alone, they can be very docile. The Siamese cat can easily be well-trained, but mostly quite well-versed at training their own masters in their ways.

Highly intelligent though, they are not as independent as other cats are. Often, they want attention and do everything in a much more boosting way. They react to both extreme moods, giving great levels of hankering when in positive mode, and do the exact opposing temper in depressing times. Siamese cats can live in the average of 15 years with CRF as the number one morbidity cause in their elderly years.…

Taking Care of Kittens – A Wonderfully Tough Responsibility

Taking Care of Kittens – A Wonderfully Tough Responsibility

It is safe to say that a lot of people love dogs, though some others are just not the dog-lover type. They may prefer to pet turtles, birds, hamsters or maybe even wild animals, while some others, just loves cats or kittens. Personal likes and dislikes differ, but there is one thing that’s certain: pets provide us with more than just companionship.

Kittens have wild instincts. However, they make wonderful pets. They are versatile, affectionate, intelligent, sociable and independent. Taking care of kittens may sound easy, but it requires a lot of responsibility. This responsibility leads you to raise various questions about caring for kittens.

Cat-proofing your home

Kittens are playful animals. So, cat-proofing is essential. Make sure your home is safe for the kitten. Always keep the doors of your dryer, cabinets and low cupboards closed. Kittens love to sleep in dark, warm places. They also love to nibble, run around and just play with anything. Keep them away from breakable valuables and don’t leave things on the floor that might be hazardous to the kitten.

Milk, food, and drinks for kitty

Kittens generally have small stomachs. They need to eat every few hours, and they need to constantly have clean, fresh water available to keep them hydrated. A diet rich in protein, calcium, taurine, and other nutrients are good for cats. They may be fed with dry food, canned, or both, but don’t give them dog food since it it not rich in taurine, which is good for their eye development and helps prevent heart disease. Cow’s milk may be good for us but for kittens, it’s a no-no.

Quality time with kitty

The first few weeks of a kitten’s life should be treated as a very precious moment in your relationship. Cuddling, petting and playing with them is highly essential. Do not let your kitten play with your finger for it will only give her the idea of finger biting, scratching, and the like. Play with your kitten gently and enjoy her soft purrs!

Veterinary care

The first visit is important and critical because the vet will perform a hands-on physical exam on the kitten. Fecal float determines worm infestation. Kitten vaccination is crucial from the first few weeks of age. At about 9 weeks, the 3-way vaccine will be given. This is the modern method of giving a 3-in-1 shot against feline calicivirus, herpes virus and feline panleukopenia. Booster shots will be given at 12-14 weeks old. Rabies vaccine are only given when cats are at risk or in some areas required by law.

Caring for kitten may be tough, but the rewards are priceless. Companionship, constant love, acceptance, and reduces stress!…

Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area, Tanzania

The Ngorongoro Crater is a large volcanic caldera which plays host to an advanced ecosystem perfect for the inhabiting and preservation of a wide variety of animals, from the aptly named king of the jungle, the lion, to the ever so rarer horned beast, the rhino.
The Crater itself has a land area size of around 8,288 Kilometres squared, and was originally established as a National Park in 1959. In 1979, the park received the honouring title of a World Heritage Site, to ensure that the unique and specialness of the Ngorongoro remains protected and preserved.
The Ngorongoro Crater really is an amazing place to visit and to witness its vast landscape from heights that stretch so wide that your eyes can barely take it all in. The bottom of the crater, or the crater floor as it is sometimes referred to is actually the remains of a collapsed volcanic caldera, which occurred between 2 and 3 million years ago. The walls surrounding the crater floor are around 2,000 feet high, and serve as the perfect way to preserve the wildlife inside.
Some of the wildlife you can expect to see at the Ngorongoro Crater can include the ‘big five’, consisting of rhino, elephant, buffalo, lion and leopard. It is also a great place to see opportunity hunting by the likes of hyenas, as they hang around the large watering hole, planning an attack on an unsuspecting flamingo. The crater also serves as a great location for bird spotters, with many different types inhabiting the park, namely the kori bustard and the black kite, which exist in larger populations here as compared to other parks within the North of Tanzania.
Not only is it the wildlife and scenery which attracts many tourists to the crater each year, there is also a strong interest of the fossils that have been found in Olduvai Gorge, which remains to be one of the most vital prehistoric landmarks on this earth today, with archaeologists estimating some fossilised remains of hominid species being over 3 million years old.…

Homemade Toys for Teacup Kittens

Homemade Toys for Teacup Kittens

Teacup kittens are inquisitive animals that love to play. While most teacup cats and kittens can spend the entire day chasing flies and other insects, many owners prefer giving their pets some toys to play with since this helps them bond with their pets. The following paragraphs will elaborate on how to make homemade toys for your beloved furry pet.

Teacup kittens love playing with tissues and tissue rolls. Many owners tie new tissue rolls on a stick and allow their kittens to chase the tissue roll. You can also give your pet a tissue roll to play with without tying the roll to any object. Your kitten will have a great time rolling around the tissue roll and getting entangled in the loose tissue. Remember to give your kitten only unscented white tissue paper. Since kittens also enjoying playing inside large cardboard boxes, the next time you have an empty cardboard box do not throw it away, instead give it to your kitten to play with.

Most kittens and cats enjoy shredding up paper. Although shredded paper makes a mess, this activity is very enjoyable for cats since they get to use their paws and claws. Providing old newspapers or an old telephone book to shred up can actually help you too since after shredding up old paper your teacup kitten will not have the urge to claw furniture. Many owners tie up newspapers and phone books to a fixed beam and they allow their kittens to go crazy shredding paper. Kittens also enjoy playing with brown paper bags, since these bags can be torn easily.

Like many breeds of dogs, teacup kittens enjoy playing with soft toys or stuff toys. While giving your teacup kitten stuff toys to play with, remember to remove the loose cotton once your kitten tears the toy. You will also have to remember to remove the eyes and nose of the stuff toy once your kitten has removed these objects from the toy. You can alternately stitch back the toy if your cat enjoys playing with one particular stuff toy. You can also give you kitten baby toys such as rattles meant for children below 3 years.

It is not recommended to give any teacup cat balls of wool or string since if your pet gets entangled then he will get scared and most likely hurt himself. Freeing an entangled pet is a hard task hence owners are advised to refrain from using wool or string. Owners should remember never to give their kittens plastic bags since this can cause immediate suffocation if the cat’s head gets stuck inside the bag. If you are giving plastic construction toys to your cat to play with then remember to remove all the small pieces of lose plastic since kittens can choke on small pieces of plastic. It is always best to give your cat or kitten toys that are suitable for newborn children since these toys do not contain small plastic parts. Teacup Kittens and cats should not be given any toys that have sharp edges since such toys can cause injuries.…

Sacred and Healing Pets

Do you remember playing in the dirt as a kid? What fun it was! That’s one of the things that I love about working on archeological digs. Additionally, I believe that archeology and psychology, the past having an impact on the here and now and the future, are intimately related. I have worked on several digs, the last being in the city of Ashkelon, Israel, a number of years ago.
We were working in the time of the Philistines. Among the other amazing discoveries, there was a huge dog cemetery. More than 700 partial or complete dog skeletons were found. They were from the fifth century B.C. It is estimated that there were dog burials probably numbering in the thousands. Each dog was buried carefully and separately in a shallow pit in what might be called a fetal position. it was then solicitously covered with dirt. The dogs ranged in age from puppies to adult dogs. They were all given the same treatment. It appears that these dogs died of natural causes. This concern for the proper burial of what in some cases were probably dog fetuses reflects an intense relationship between dogs and humans. Yet, because many of these dogs lived only for a short time, if at all, the attachment could not be based on mere companionship.
It is thought that the Ashkelon dogs were revered as sacred animals. They may have been associated with a particular deity. It is believed that it was the Phoenicians who were responsible for the dog burials at Ashkelon and who considered the dog a sacred animal. Presumably the dog became associated with healing because of the curative powers evident from licking its own wounds or sores.
Working in this area of the dig was enthralling. We had to be so meticulous. We dug in each individual site, removing each bone carefully, brushing it off and placing it with care in the appropriate place. As I was doing this, I thought often of each of the dogs that I had had over the years. They were all sacred and healing in some way to me. I was devastated when I had to say good-bye to them.
Do you feel that your pet is sacred and heals you? My current dog, Dafka, heals me. It’s not necessarily by licking any sores or wounds that I might have. It’s just by being with me. When I’m down, he makes me laugh. When I come home, he is ecstatic to see me, and it’s not just me. Since he is a therapy dog, he sometimes does wonders for my clients. Once, when one of my clients called at the last minute to say that he wasn’t coming because he didn’t feel like it, I told him that Dafka would miss him. My client showed up!…

Why Get a Baby Ferret?

Why Get a Baby Ferret?

If you have decided that you want to get a baby ferret. Then it is always good idea to have a good understanding about the natural disposition of ferrets. The decision that you make should be based on your lifestyle, as well as your knowledge and experience.

Some people think you have to rear a baby ferret or (Kit) in order to be able to form a strong bond between you. But in reality, the age of the ferret does not really matter. An adopted adult ferret will love you just as strongly and loyally as if he had been adopted as a baby.

It can be very hard to resist a baby of any species, especially a kit. They can be a delight, but they can also be very mischievous. These little guys seem to have endless reserves of energy, so they are going to be keeping you on your toes.

Generally speaking, it’s probably not a good idea to get a kit if you have small children in the house to look after. The baby kit being far more active and playful than an older ferret will demand a lot more of your time. And as the kit is still in the learning process about chewing and biting things, he might start getting a bit “nippy.”

This is something that you will have to actively discourage. If you do decide to get a kit, you will have to train him and socialize him at the same time. You have to be the one person that teaches him what is right and what is wrong. This can be a bit of a task even if you do not have any children in the house. If you add a couple of small kids to the scene, then the whole thing could very quickly become overwhelming.

As a responsible ferret owner, you will have to make sure that your baby ferret gets all of his shots. If you have bought your baby ferret from a reputable source, he should have already had at least his first distemper shot. But you may have to take him for his remaining shots, or for any other medicine that he might be on. The bottom line line is that a baby ferret can be joy to look after, but they do require a lot of work.…

Getting a Kitten? – How to Introduce It to Your Adult Cat

Getting a Kitten? – How to Introduce It to Your Adult Cat

Introducing a new cat into your home is no easy feat, especially when you already have a cat or two (or more!) already living there. I am going to share with you the following strategy that I, and many others, have used to make a new cat or kitten comfortable in their new home.

One of the reasons why it is so hard to integrate new cats into a home is because cats are, in general, very territorial. It is simply in their nature. Many of the common traits of cats are due to territory marking- think about your cat rubbing its head on things, or stretching up and scratching the walls or furniture-these are behaviors designed to leave behind a scent and mark the cat’s territory. When you bring a new cat into the home, the older cat feels as if there is an invader in his territory.

The best thing to do, when bringing a new kitten into the home, is to separate the new kitten from the other cats for at least a week, if not longer. You will want to put him behind a solid door, a single bedroom works, or an extra bathroom, find what works for your home. Make sure that this room has all the amenities that the kitten will need-a litter box, food and water bowls, toys, a place to sleep, etc.

During the time spent in isolation, make sure to spend a lot of time showing affection to every cat in the house. This makes sure the older cats don’t feel like they are being replaced, and the new kitten doesn’t feel like it is being ignored. Try feeding the cats near the door to the isolation room. This will allow them to smell each other through the door, and associate the cat smell with the smell of food-which cats always like!

When you are ready, you can allow the new kitten out of the isolation room. Make sure to keep an eye on all the cats when you do this and be ready to break up any physical altercations. Hissing is fine as long as they do not attack one another.

One simple way to make sure that they get along is to make sure that you have more than enough of the things that the cats may fight over. For example, you should have a litter box for each cat, as well as one extra one. Make sure to have enough food bowls and such as well. Also spread everything out so that one cat can’t simply guard the food/litter/toys and not let the kitten at it.

Good luck with your new kitten!…

Cat Dander Air Cleaner—5 Features To Steer Clear Of

If you’re allergic to your cat, you know that it is the protein in the dander that can cause such horrible symptoms. If you’re tired of sneezing, coughing, watering eyes, congestion, and feeling as if you can’t breathe whenever you cat comes near, you need an air purifier for the dander. Here are 5 features to avoid when selecting one.

One Without A HEPA—This type of filter is a star when it comes to removing microscopic airborne particles. Spelled out it stands for high efficiency particle arresting filter and is the same technology used by hospitals to insure the air is clean.

It is able to remove 99.97% of particles that are.3 microns or smaller. And it does it with 97% efficiency. The benefit to you is that this type of filter is guaranteed to leave only 3 out of every 10,000 airborne particulates. That’s an amazing track record by anyone’s s standard.. That’s what you want working for you against cat dander.

A Unit With Zero Pre-Filters-These filters that come before the other filters are an excellent indication that your filter will last a long time. They can eliminate the big and medium size particulates saving the smaller size filter to trap small to microscopic particles..

Having these filters sort through the pollutants and leave the smallest pollutants for the filter with the smallest holes saves you money on replacement filters and bunches of time you would have spent replacing filters. Large and medium particle pre-filters should be standard on your cleaner.

No Odor Control—Living with any animal means living with some odor. For those of us who love cats, their particularly scent can be comforting. This will probably not be the case for others who visit your home..

A purifier that uses carbon cloth for odor control is the best of both worlds. Originally designed by the British Military to be used against chemical warfare, it is excellent at removing gases, odors, and chemicals. And because it is a cloth, it also eliminates particles.

Limited Operation—Dander production is continuous. It is the skin’s way of discarding old and damaged skin for newer healthier skin that is more able to ward off disease and infection.

A unit with a motor that can only run for part of the day should be left on the shelf in the store. Because dander is constantly being shed, you need a cleaner that can be just as constant about removing it.. A split capacitor motor will allow 24 hour operation that is safe, effective, and efficient.

One Speed Filtration—There are some days when things just happen faster than others. Having a cleaner that is able to take out pollutants more quickly when you know that there is more in your air is a huge advantage.. Having a purifier that has a low, medium, and high speed adjustment will let your cleaner keep up with whatever is happening in your life and your cat’s.…

How to Choose the Best Food for Cats?

If you have recently just become an owner of a pet cat, you should be wary of what to give to it especially in giving him the right kind of food. Remember that they also have their own nutritional needs you need to compensate. Cats are carnivores by nature and their nutrition would mostly depend on protein sources. It is a must that they be fed in a balanced diet to avoid overweighing. Here are some tips for you to follow upon choosing your cat food

As you may have noticed cats are often fed with canned food. Too much of it could lead to dehydration. Veterinarians would recommend something else to go along with it. This is a good way to prevent urinary tract infection in the long run.

Take note of the age of your cat. If it is still too young, perhaps less than half a year old then do not ever give him cat food for the adults only. There are a lot of different kitten foods that are suitable for the young ones out there. Once the cat has reached over six months, you can make a combination of adult and kitten food.

There are some foods that don’t harm the teeth of your cat. You could choose that to save your pet from different kinds of dental problems.

There are some diets also made especially for cats. Home or indoor cats don’t move a lot so tendency is that they would be overweight. Ask the veterinarian for his suggestions. Check the label for m the product as

Hairball is good but don’t give it every single day since it can upset the stomach. Fiber is good for constipation.

To make sure that your cat would be in a better condition it is always best that you make some varieties once in a while. When you go shopping for some cat food, choose different kinds like dry food, canned, semi-moist food, etc. Remember, too much of something is bad enough

Don’t give cats milk from the cows. The digestion system isn’t capable of such dairy product. Don’t give leftovers as well! It is definitely a no-no to do that.

Organic food could be in for the cat food but then it doesn’t mean that it’s the best. You could opt to have one as well but don’t let it fool you. However, you should also notice what kind of flavor your cat is enjoying.

Well making sure that it is rich in protein. If possible, avoid grains.

Here is a list of nutrition that you should consider giving to your cat:

Yarn threads, rubber bands, string – these are things that could look really appetizing to them. Do take care that they won’t swallow it because it may result in some internal problems.…

Air Travel For Dogs And Cats Ten Strategies to Ensure a Carefree Trip

Traveling via airplane tends to be remarkably stressful, both for you and the four-legged members of your family. Nevertheless with careful homework, you can guarantee a safe and enjoyable expedition for everyone.

Animal welfare associations encourage pet owners to think carefully about flying their dogs and cats on commercial aircraft, specifically if they plan on checking them in as cargo. Unless your four-legged friend is small enough to fit under your seat and you can bring him or her in the cabin, the ASPCA recommends pet owners to not fly their animal. If pet owners have previously committed to transporting their animal companions on commercial flights, here are ten tips for safe air travel with your dog or cat:

Before You Fly1. Have your pet checked by a veterinarian, and ensure that all vaccinations are current. Obtain a health certificate from your veterinarian dated within ten days of departure. Be aware, if you are traveling outside of the continental United States, even more preparation and health care requirements could be needed. For more information, contact the foreign office of the country to which you will be traveling.

Microchip and ID Tag 2. Make sure your dog or cat has a microchip for identification and is wearing an ID tag and a collar. Breakaway collars are best for cats. Also, the collar ought to contain destination details in the event your dog or cat escapes.

A Direct Flight 3. Reserve a direct flight if feasible. This will greatly reduce the odds that your dog or cat is left on the tarmac during intense weather conditions or mistreated by baggage personnel.

Escape-Proof Carrier 4. If your pet will be in the cabin with you, under your seat: Make sure to use a sturdy, escape-proof carrier. Felines, in particular, can effortlessly squeeze through small spaces. Appropriate carriers are required by most airlines and are obtainable through airlines or at pet-supply stores. Double-check the carrier’s clasp and consider padlocking it. The carrier must have adequate ventilation, with at least a three-fourth-inch rim around the sides so the air holes won’t be covered if the kennel is pushed against other boxes.

Shipping Crate 5. If your pet will be in the in the baggage hold: Purchase a USDA-approved shipping crate that is large enough for your pet to sit, stand and turn around in easily. Shipping crates can be bought from numerous pet supply shops and airlines.

Labels and Supplies 6. Write the words “Live Animal” in letters at least one inch high on top of and at least one side of the crate. Use arrows to prominently show the upright position of the crate. On the top of the crate, write the name, address and telephone number of your pet’s destination spot, and whether you will be escorting him or if someone else is picking him up. Be certain that the door is firmly shut, but not locked, so that airline employees can reach your pet in case of an emergency. Line the crate bottom with some type of bedding–towels paper or shredded–to absorb accidents.

Photo ID 7. Affix a recent image of your pet to the top of the crate for identification purposes. If your pet breaks free from the carrier, this could save your pet’s life. You should also carry a photograph of your pet.

Shipping Crate 8. The day before you depart, be sure to freeze a small dish or tray of water for your animal. This way, it can’t spill during loading, and will thaw by the time he’s thirsty. Tape a small bag, preferably cloth, of dry food outside the crate. Airline staff will be able to feed your animal in the event he gets hungry on long-distance flights or a layover.

Tranquilizing Your Pet 9. Sedating your cat or dog is largely not recommended, as it could impede his respiration. Ask your veterinarian first.

Communicate with Airline Personnel 10. Tell every airline staff you come upon, on the ground and in the air, that you are flying with an animal in the cargo hold. This way, they will be ready if some other considerations or attention is needed.

Bonus Tip: Worst Case Scenario If the airplane is late, or if you have any worries about the health of your pet, insist that airline staff examine the animal whenever feasible. In some situations, extracting the pet from the cargo hold and de-planing may be called for.

Conclusion If you must travel by plane, contemplate leaving your pet at home. If you have to fly with your pet, do your research, make preparations well ahead of time and be certain you know the airline’s restrictions concerning and requirements for flying with pets.…

Dog Meet Kitty

Dog Meet Kitty

Bringing a new kitten is home is always an exciting thing. You probably feel like you can not wait to introduce the newest addition to your friends and family. You are most likely already looking forward to many long years of happy companionship to come. Exactly how you choose to introduce your new kitten to your home will make a huge difference in how well the other pets in your home make the adjustment, especially if you are introducing your kitten to a dog.

Introducing a new kitten into a household that already has a dog is a delicate situation. Keep both of pets separated, with the kitten staying in its own room, at least for the first week or so. Then, just pick a time when your dog is either outside or in its crate, and let the kitten begin to explore the rest of your home. Once the kitten seems comfortable in your home, you can begin introducing your dog and the kitten. Keep your dog on a short leash, give the command to sit or lie down or stay and allow the kitten to come into the room. If your dog remains quiet and the kitten seems interested, let the kitten come over and investigate your dog. The main concern here is whether your dog might get aggressive, or if the kitten might get scared and claw at your dog’s face. Knowing some of your new kitten’s prior history can help you know just what to expect. Obviously, a kitten that has been chased by a dog in its prior home is less likely to be completely comfortable in a new home with a dog already living there.

Some dogs will be wonderful with kittens, while some dogs will view a new kitten as a threat. There are some dogs that instinctively see smaller animals as mere prey to be hunted. Watch your dog and kitten closely. Do not leave them alone unsupervised until you are certain that they will get along. Make sure that there are safe space in your home where the kitten can retreat from your dog. One solution that works well is a baby gate placed across the doorway of a particular room in your home. Also, be sure to set up the kitten’s litter boxes somewhere out of your dog’s reach. This has the twin aims of preventing your dog from eating the cat feces and litter, as well as inadvertently keeping a scared kitten from using its litter box.

Remember that kittens are truly creatures of habit. Your kitten will like everything to be as predictable as possible and for its routine to stay the same. You’ll be taking your kitten out of a familiar environment, into a noisy moving vehicle, and then expect it to adjust to new surroundings. To make the kitten’s transition as smooth and stress-free as possible, remember to take things slowly. Give your kitten plenty of time to get used to its new home.…

CBD Oil Cat Treats: Differences Between THC and CBD

We live in the world in which things are changing rapidly from technological advances to scientific studies that concluded that consumption of weed could be healthy if you apply it correctly.

The cannabis product market grew rapidly in the last few years, and it will be one of the fastest-growing markets in the U.S. The essential cannabis compounds include THC or tetrahydrocannabinol and CBD or cannabidiol.

It is essential to understand the difference between cannabis and hemp, even though they come from the same plant. Generally, legal hemp has to contain up to 0.3% of THC to be allowed in the free market.

The best way to learn the effects of cannabinoids on cats is by clicking here for additional info.

We can find it in the form of gummies, gels, oils, extracts, supplements for both human and pet consumption. On the other hand, THC comes with psychoactive properties, which leads to high sensation and feeling of euphoria.

In most situations, people consume it through smoking, but you can also find it in tinctures, edibles, oils, as well as capsules. Remember that both compounds tend to interact with our endocannabinoid system, but they produce different effects.

Differences Between THC and CBD

1.   Chemical Structure

Both compounds feature the same molecular structure, but the main difference is how atoms are arranged, which causes different effects on our bodies.

Generally, our body tends to create endocannabinoids for maintaining numerous bodily functions, which means that these compounds are chemically similar to them.

As a result, when you consume them, they will interact with your cannabinoid receptors, which will lead to a particular effect depending on what you used.

As a result, the neurotransmitter will start to release in our brain, which are chemicals that are relaying messages between cells and have an essential role in the immune system, sleep, stress, and pain, among others.

2.   Psychoactive Properties

Even though these two cannabinoids feature similar chemical structures, they do not share the same effects, especially when it comes to the psychoactive approach. Both of them come with psychoactive features but in different manners.

CBD will not produce the same euphoric feeling, which is a common effect that we experience after consuming weed with high levels of THC.

As a result, it can help with seizures, depression, and anxiety, which makes it a perfect remedy and alternative to harmful and potent meds that come with severe side effects.

On the other hand, TCH binds with CB1 receptors, which is why we tend to experience a sense of euphoria as well as high.

CBD will not bind to CB1 receptors the same way, which is why it requires THC to do it, and as a result, we tend to experience both sedation and euphoria after consumption.

3.   Legality

We have mentioned above that things are always changing, especially in the USA. Today, both compounds are considered as Schedule I drug if we follow federal regulations.

On the other hand, hemp is not controlled substance anymore, but both FDA and DEA are still classifying it as illegal.

The paradox lies in the idea that more than thirty-three states, as well as Washington D.C., passed and allowed the consumption of cannabis in medicinal purposes. It means that your general care doctor can prescribe you for chronic pain and other issues that you may experience.

By visiting this website: https://www.healtheuropa.eu/american-food-and-drug-administration-cbd/93694/ you will learn more about the FDA’s regulations when it comes to cannabis-derived products.

At the same time, some states went even further and allowed the recreational use of cannabis, which means that people can do it without regarding the medicinal properties. In these states, you will be able to purchase CBD without any additional problem.

However, we recommend you to check out the regulations from your state before you engage in purchasing because that way you will be able to protect yourself against potential issues that may arise.

Remember that if you possess any cannabis-relayed product while in the state where it is illegal to have it, you can face legal issues as a result.

4.   Medical Benefits

Even though THC comes with psychoactive effects on your brain and body, it features some medical benefits similarly to CBD. They can help you deal with chronic pain and get relief from particular conditions that you are experiencing.

Of course, if you purchase CBD oil, for instance, you will not experience euphoric effects similarly as THC, which is why some people are checking the contents before they purchase a supplement.

CBD is also effective for treating your cat’s disorders and chronic symptoms, which is why you should check out getunderskeleton CBD to learn more about it.

A few years back, the FDA approved a first prescription medication that features CBD for treating the worst form of epilepsy. However, the perfect …

Why Buying a Pet From a Long Island Puppy Store Is The Best Idea?

Have you decided to get a puppy? Is it time to get someone new in your life to share your moments of happiness with? You’re probably wondering how to do this move and what’s the best place to get one?

The answer is simple – buy a dog from a Long Island puppy store. There are more reasons why you should do this. Some of them are explained below, so if you want to know more on this subject, please read on and learn all about it!

Being vaccinated

One of the most important issues regarding a new pet is whether they are vaccinated? When you adopt pets from the kennels you don’t know what this animal went through and you don’t know how their health condition can affect your family.

If you have a small child, some of the diseases that the adopted dog might have because it didn’t get the shots in time can infect your children. You’ll create a big problem out of nothing.

When you get it from a boutique shop for pets, you can be sure about this. They have proof about the vaccination status, when and where they got the vaccines and what are they protected from. It’s a sure way to know exactly what you’re dealing with and what comes into your home as a new member. And we all want best for our family, right?

Knowing the pedigree

The pets coming from a puppy store are all well-known of their pedigree. They are gotten from top-notch breeders who guarantee about the parents of the puppies. Learn more about the importance of the pedigree here.

Some people think this is elitist behavior, but it’s much more about convenience than about being elitist. A pet that has good genes and has well bread parents will behave much better and will handle the new environment much easier.

One of the most important issues in getting a new member in the family is knowing where it is coming from. Even if it’s a human, you’d like to know about that person’s family so you’d know what you can expect from them.

Providing a happy and healthy life

Have in mind that there’s not much difference in getting a puppy from the store and the shelter. In both situations, you’re basically saving a dog from being locked and you provide them with a new healthy life.

In a lot of cases, the puppies get an owner that is not appropriate for them. People who only buy them as a present and then get tired of taking care of them, or people who were simply not ready for getting a pet in their lives and after they realize this – abandon them on the streets or into the wilderness letting the animal live a short and stressful life in a surrounding that’s not familiar to them.

This is a clear reason why it’s good to get a dog from the shops, but only if you’re really sure that you need one. If you live with a family talk to each member and see if all of them are ready for this move. It’s not appropriate to get the pet and then change your mind. This is not a toy, remember that.

It’s a living creature with feelings and ready to give you a lot of love if you know how to answer this. Some of the happiest people on Earth are those living with pets. A pet can share happiness and make your feelings better when you don’t feel so good. See this great article on the subject for more: https://www.cheatsheet.com/culture/ways-pets-improve-your-life.html/

Conclusion

As you can see, getting a new pet from the store is always a better idea. However, it doesn’t matter where you get it, you always need to be sure about your intentions. Never abandon your new member if you realize you don’t want them anymore.

If you’re sure, it’s better to get it from the store because of a few obvious reasons. These people sell only well-bread and disease-free dogs that will be a valuable member of your family. They are smart and take orders much easier than a dog from the streets.…

Adopt a Pet

The Basics Of Cat Care – What You Should Know

Several jobs come included with the package when you adopt a new cat. Feeding and entertaining your pet are the obvious two, but you also need to focus on keeping them clean. Cleaning a cat can be an extremely daunting experience because cats hate water and they usually have claws. Use the tips below to keep your feline healthy and clean all year around.

To help prevent tapeworm infestation in cats, feed a small amount of food grade diatomaceous earth for two weeks out of each month. About a quarter of a teaspoon per cat per day is adequate. Food grade diatomaceous earth kills internal parasites and causes them to be expelled from the system.

Keep your cat healthy and non-finicky by introducing a varied diet. Always purchase several different brands of food and rotate them. In this way, your cat will be used to trying and accepting new tastes. If one food brand goes out of business, you will always have lots of other acceptable choices to offer.

Keep your cat’s coat healthy by giving them a supplement of nutritional yeast. Nutritional yeast is an inexpensive supplement that can be found in most health food stores. Simply sprinkle a little bit on your cat’s dry food, or mix it in with their wet food. Not only do they love how it tastes, but it’s full of protein and vitamins that will keep them looking their best!

Feed your cats proper food. Remember that cats must eat meat. Only give your cats cat food to eat. Do not feed them or let them eat dog food. Dogs and cats have different nutritional needs and some of the ingredients in dog food could harm your cat. Feeding your cat dog food for food could also lead to malnourishment, among other issues.

If your cat kicks litter all over the floor, simply use a bigger container. A large, roomy tote with high sides makes a good litter box. A big round tub also makes a good litter box. A restaurant size bus tub is a capacious litter box. Providing higher sides and more space will solve your cat’s litter kicking problem.

If your cat is overweight, there are two things you need to do. First, you have to adjust the amount of food you give them, and the other is that you need to get them exercising. Get them cat toys, or play with them yourself, to make sure they are getting the activity they need to slim down.

Do you love your cat but suffer from allergies? If giving up your feline-friend is not something that you can do, try these things first. Get rid of as much carpeting as possible because your cats dander gets trapped in it. You can also not allow your cat in your bedroom at all. This will make living with your cat easier on your allergies.

Pet

Entertain your cat with simple “toys” made from household objects. Many cats enjoy exploring boxes, such as those that hold 12-packs, small appliances, or other products. Before allowing your pet to play with a box, you should be sure that the animal cannot get stuck in small openings or tight spaces. This would be dangerous and very frightening to your pet!

Never assume that a fence will keep your cat from leaving your yard. Unless the fence is specially designed to keep cats from escaping, it’s safe to say that your cat will find a way out. Also, remember that your fence must be able to keep other animals from entering your backyard and harming your pet.

Pet Adoption

If you are looking for a new home for your kitty, consider registering with an online pet adoption agency. Some of these companies screen applicants, so you will be sure that your pet is going into a good home. This is better than selling him to a creep who lurks around Craigslist all the time.

Now, not only can your cat be the biggest and baddest feline in the neighborhood, it can also be the cleanest cat in town. You might get lucky and find a cat that doesn’t mind the water and remains calm while covered in soap. Keep these tips in mind while you proceed and don’t let the past become involved.…

Tips All Cat Owners Need To Know

Cats are some of the most lovable creatures a person can own as a pet. However owning a cat comes with a lot of responsibilities. The following article will help teach you exactly what you need to know about owning a cat. Be sure to read and learn what it takes so that you can make an informed decision as to whether or not a cat is a good idea for your household.

Get a pet water fountain. Cats can be prone to dehydration, and running water entices them to drink. It is an evolutionary habit that developed because in the wild, running water is less likely to be contaminated than a stagnant pool. Your pet will enjoy the water more, and will drink more often.

Give your new cat some space. Moving to a new home can be stressful on a cat, especially one who is no longer a kitten. To help them adjust, give them a quiet place that they can call their own, such as a spare bathroom or laundry room. This gives them a safe space they can retreat to until they have become comfortable with exploring the whole house. Depending on the cat, this process may take a few days up to a month or more.

If your cat is pregnant, set up a comfortable, safe place for her to have her kittens. A big cardboard box equipped with a pillow and blanket is good. Place it in the back of a closet or other out of the way place. Keep food and water dishes nearby.

If your cat has a tendency to eat your plants, you can stop him. You can either purchase bitter apple spray and spray the pot, or you can put a bit of clove oil on a cotton ball and bury it a bit in the soil. Your cat will avoid both.

When getting a small kitten to eat dry kitten food, be patient. At first they usually just play with food. It may take a little while, but they’ll eventually learn that they are supposed to eat it rather than toy with it. If the food is moistened first with milk, a kitten may take to it faster.

Provide safe and engaging entertainment for your cat at all times. Even if you cannot be in the house with your pet, you should ensure that it has access to toys and other diversions. Sometimes we perceive that cats are lazy animals, but that doesn’t mean they don’t enjoy playing to pass the time. This is especially important if your cat is alone in your house for long periods of time.

Cats have an uncanny ability to always find their way home. If you move to a new home, keep your cat inside for about a month. This will help your cat to familiarize themselves with the smells of your new place. If you let your cat out too soon, they might go home to the wrong house.

When you are looking to finally adopt a new kitten, but don’t want to spend big bucks on an expensive bloodline, you should investigate your local shelters. Most animal shelters offer dogs and cats that need a home badly, regardless of their heritage or costs. You may be able to find a similar cat with a different cost.

When introducing a new cat to your home, make sure that your other pets have time to adjust. You will want to give the new cat extra attention, but it is important to keep up established routines with your other pets. Allow the new cat to explore its new home while you care for your other pets.

Animal Control

Keep track of your feline friend by having the animal microchipped. This small device is implanted beneath the skin between your cat’s shoulder blades. Microchip implantation may sting for a few seconds, but the implant is otherwise unnoticeable and will not cause your pet any discomfort. This chip makes it easier for animal control to locate your cat if it goes missing.

Owning a cat is not easy. It is going to require a lot of work on your part to make sure your cat remains happy and healthy. However, if you implement the advice mentioned in the article above, there is no reason why you can’t be a wonderful owner to your feline friend.…
